NEW TALENT SHAKE UP BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Orange British Snowboard & Freestyle Ski Championships, in association with O’Neill, Laax, Switzerland 14 – 19 March 2005.

14 March 2005. Clear blue skies and sunshine opened up the 2005 Orange British Snowboard and Freestyle Ski Championships in Laax, Switzerland, as over 100 competitors entered the Snowboard Halfpipe and Freestyle Ski Big Air disciplines. Giving the seeded pros a run for their money it was the younger new comers that stole today’s show.

SNOWBOARDING

It was an exciting day in Laax’s 120 meter superpipe as UK’s top 12 males and six women battled it out in the Halfpipe finals. The GB World Cup team and Olympic hopefuls early set the pace pushing the standard of riding to new heights. Competitors were judged on amplitude, rotation, style and overall impression. Taking two runs each and the best run counting towards the title.

In the men’s competition it was close between team mates Dom Harington, reigning champion and Dan Wakeham, current Europa Cup Champion, with Harington just retaining his title after Wakeham sketched one of his landings. Giving them a run for their money was NZ team coach Tom Willmott with his strong, smooth style, finishing third. All three were executing back to back rotations and inverted tricks 12 feet out of the pipe.

In the women’s final Lesley McKenna, current champion and 2006 Olympic hopeful set the standard throwing down 2 solid runs with her text book technicality and 6ft airs earning her first place. Newcomer Kendal brown at only 15 out shone the rest of the girls to take home second, with a fresh style that included back to back rotations on the first two hits. Jenny Jones took third beating GB World cup rider Kate Foster by a whisker.

FREESTYLE SKIING

The Freestyle Ski Championships started in style with the Big Air. A great atmosphere spurred on the skiers as they hit the optional 15, 10 or 6 meter jumps. The highlight of the competition was a perfectly executed 180 rotation, landing backwards, by amateur Naomi Edmondson. As one of Freestyle Skiing’s hardest tricks this brought competitors, judges and spectator into a frenzy and Edmondson was declared the champion. Runner up in the women’s competition was GB pro Emma Lonsdale and Shelley Jones took third place.

In the men’s competition it was a close call between two of UK’s top skiers Andy Bennett and Tom Last, who both had to fight off stiff competition from newcomer to the British scene Brad Scott (17 yrs). Performing a clean 720 over the 15 meter jump Bennett’s experience won him the title as Last finished second and Scott third.

AIR AND STYLE AT THE ORANGE BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Orange British Snowboard & Freestyle Ski Championships, in association with O’Neill, Laax, Switzerland 14 – 19 March 2005.

15 March 2005. The second day of the Orange Brits saw more sunshine as the action continued with the Snowboard Boardercross and Freestyle Ski Slopestyle Championships.

FREESTYLE SKIING

For the freestyle skiers it was all about style and technical ability in today’s Slopestyle Championships. The course was fast and offered a jib section at the start with various rails and boxes for some slide action, whilst the middle and finish sections were made up of various sized jumps. In the men’s final it was again a close battle between Andy Bennett and the young Brad Scott. Bennett picked up high scores on his smooth jumps while Scott amazed the judges with his skills on the rails but Bennett picked up highest score on his smooth jumps, including a switch (backwards) 720 tailgrab, crowning him the champion for the second day. Paddy Graham finished third.

The women’s final was a hard one for the judges with some amazing runs from the UK’s top females. Again it was a newcomer to the scene, Beanie Milneholme that stole the show after hitting all the rails before some nice straight airs over the jumps. Favorite Becca Hammond took second place just in front of Shelley Jones.

SNOWBOARDING

The heat was on in the Boardercross competition with competitors competing head to head in heats of four, racing down a technical course of banked turns and jumps. In the men’s final heat the excitement rouse as all four racers fell in the first turn. First up was GB World Cup team member James Fosters who then took a clear lead, finishing first with 1.5 second before Tom Willmott. Last year’s Champion Steve Trolland came in third.

The women’s final mirrored the action of the men’s as the ladies raced in to each other in the very same first turn. Laura Berry, just 16, was quick back on her feet to take the lead winning the race with a whopping 8.5 seconds. Mollie Percival came in second 5 seconds in front of third, Pippa Stowell.

GRAHAM BELL TAKES SKIERCROSS CHAMPION’S TITLE

The Orange British Snowboard & Freestyle Ski Championships, in association with O’Neill, Laax, Switzerland 14 – 19 March 2005.

16 March 2005. A record number of snowboarders turned up for the Slopestyle Championships at the third day of the Orange Brits and the Skiercross offered great action as Graham Bell returned to the startgate in perfect bluebird conditions.

FREESTYLE SKIING

There was lot of expectations in today’s Skiercross Championships as former GB Alpine racer and Ski Sunday presenter Graham Bell entered today’s race. Coming out third of the startgate Bell advanced to second place after the second turn. Chasing young new comer Brad Scott (17) through the third turn, Bell just managed to catch up with Scott over the three rollers and they flew over the last jump literally side by side. Being to the left of Scott, Bell had the course on his side as the finish line was in a slight angle and he just beat Scott over the line. A very happy and proud Bell was very impressed by the young Scott who had given him a great run for his money. Third over the line was Steve Trolland, who also took bronze in the Boardercross the day before.

With a great start for all four competitors the women’s race was equally close throught the first few turns. Emily Sarsfield showed great technical ability as she confidently went over the three rollers ahead of the other girls and kept her marginal lead in front of Tessa Phillip all the way through to the finish. Becca Hammond finished third.

SNOWBOARDING

Due to the large numbers of competitors there was only time to run the qualifiers. Finals will run before the Big Air Championships tomorrow morning.

ORANGE BRITS SEES FIRST D-SPIN 1080 IN UK

The Orange British Snowboard & Freestyle Ski Championships, in association with O’Neill, Laax, Switzerland 14 – 19 March 2005.

17 March 2005. The final day of the Orange British Snowboard and Freestyle Ski Championships 2005 staged some of the best competitions of the week. In the Freestyle Ski Halfpipe the first ever D-spin 1080 by a Brit blew the minds of judges and spectators alike.

FREESTYLE SKIING

Another bright blue sky welcomed the skiers Halfpipe competition today, as Mike Wakefield ruled the day after perfectly landing his first attempt for a D-spin 1080. Second place went to Andy Bennett who linked high, smooth rotations through out his run. 17 year old Paddy Graham came in third with an impressive run including a backflip 180 (flare).

A favorite on the Orange AIM Series circuit in the UK, Emma Lonsdale owned the women’s competition with her solid run of back to back high technical spins while Kat Griffith finished second lacking the amplitude as she performed two 540 spins. Amateur Philly Gammell proudly grabbed the third place with great straight airs.

SNOWBOARDING

The snowboard competition started with the Slopestyle finals after they were carried over from the previous day. Stepping up the standard of their performances the top 12 men and top six women from yesterday’s qualifications showcased some amazing talent.

In the men’s competition 2004 runner up Scott McMorris was on top form from the start. Utilizing the entire course of rail and box obstacles and jumps McMorris claimed the title with a smooth run of back to back technical tricks, finishing of with a 900 rotation over the last jump. New comer on to the British competition circuit, Ed Gun came a surprise second after showcasing a fluid run of stylish tricks and technical jumps. Reigning champion Tyler Chorton came in third with one of the most stylish rail runs of the competition.

For the women’s final the course had softened up nicely giving the UK’s best the confidence to shine. International pro Jenny Jones, back this year after injury, was the clear winner with a perfect, clean run hitting all the features with style and finishing with two 360 rotations. Mollie Percival took second with the biggest 360 in the women’s competition and taking third with a solid rail run was reining champion, 16 year old Laura Berry.

In the afternoon sun the competitors continued to impress in the Big Air Championships.

The men all hit the big 15 meter jump for front flips, massive airs and multiple rotations. Reigning champion Tyler Chorlton defended his title approaching the jump switch to perform a school book 720 rotation with a perfect landing. Closely behind were Danny Wheeler and Simon Brass who both executed another two perfect 720s, though Wheeler scoring highest out of the two with combining his 720 with a nice clean grab.

The women impressed the gathered crowd as they fearlessly followed suit over the 15 meter jump. Jones, Percival and Berry proved themselves yet again as UK's top three after claiming the same line up as in the Slopestyle. As with the men's second and third it was Jenny Jones' full grab that differentiated her backside 360 from Mollie Boys' as she was crowned champion for the second time in one day. Laura Berry opted for the 12 meter jump and a great clean 360 as well.

Of course what these release don't really describe was the great vibe of the week. Laax is a great resort. A little pricey perhaps, but the hospitality on and off the mountain made up for that three-fold and the mountain itself really does have a great park, a halfpipe, superpipe and some really good runs fulls of natural hits and wide cruisers.

The evening entertainments were second to none. If you can go next year do.
