Burton Black Metal calls for all that are brave enough to come forward and unite against a new challenge.
On Saturday the 4th November the Burton Black Metal entered the third leg of its epic four-stop tour around the UK. With word getting out from the two previous events the turn out was one of the highest so far. The format for the evening was a jam session with the top ten male and top three women riders going into final at the end of the night. There were some familiar faces out on the slope from the Braehead and Castleford events, obviously wanting another shot on the amazing four-piece rail set-up. As with the two other events the layout changed to offer new lines and trick possibilities. The riders rose to the occation with some technical jibbing and silky smooth style, with every feature being ridden to its full potential. For the first time in this year’s comps one rider landed a nollie front flip off the “shark fin” rail, and other tricks that were wowing the crowds in the first event were standard practice at Tamworth. With music from DJ Kim and some hilarious commentary the atmosphere was heating up and the riders started to throw down their best tricks. Chris Kightly and Steven Owen were racing down in a train and gaping the step-up box and James Carr landed one of the smoothest frontside tailslide, dainish out I think I’ve ever seen. The girls were slaying the rails with a host of different tricks. Steph Caller and Emily Richardson both got some good runs under their belts, which impressed the judges. Emily Williams rode with fearless style and landed some smooth board slides through the “shark fin” and Laura Berry put on her usual “stomp everything you try” show. Half way through the evening the riders got a break to go and get some refreshments while the slope and the kickers got groomed ready for the final. Then it was all guns blazing for the last forty-five minute session with every rider wanting their place in the final. Picking the chosen thirteen must have been difficult as the standard was ridiculously high. The final was based around two runs. The best run counted and they had to land both their tricks without skidding out or touching their hands down. The girls were up first. Emily Richardson tamed the step-up box, which took her out in dramatic style at the first leg in Braehead. But no one could stop Laura Berry who stomped a smooth switch frontside boardslide on the urban style down rail, which got her the win in the end. The men’s final was one of the best we’ve seen yet. Matt Higson got technical on the down rail, Nate Kern span 270° on 270° off the c-box and Steve Revill hit every rail like he’d been riding them for years when really it was his first Black Metal this season. But the rider who got the respect from the other competitors, and the final vote from the judges was Neil Campbell from Milton Keynes. He clinched the win with a frontside 50/50 to frontside 360 out on the down rail with outstanding style and earned himself a trip with the Burton Team and Document to the Hungerpain Hotel in Austria. Neil and Laura also go through to the super final held at Milton Keynes on the 18th November after the last leg of the tour where they can battle it out for the ultimate board sports package which includes snowboard, boots, bindings, surfboard, wakeboard, kitesurf and skateboard. The Black Metal crew would like to thank their sponsors Relentless, Analog, Anon, Red, Gravis and Burton, as well as the team at the Snowdome for a superb digging crew. And remember there is only one more opportunity to get into the final and be in with a chance to win that superb prize.
