Burton Black Metal calls for all that are brave enough to come forward and unite against a new challenge.
SNO!zone MK LegLast Saturday Milton Keynes hosted the fourth and final leg of this year’s Burton Black Metal tour around the UK’s fridges. It was a jam format with the top eight male and top three female riders going into a two run final at the end of the night. With the largest number of entrance the competition has seen so far things were busy out on the slope with riders queuing up to test their skills on the four piece rail set-up. As with the three previous events the rails were rotated to offer different lines and trick combinations. The competitors had the choice of either a c-box, step-up box or shark fin rail to start with, followed by the compulsory urban style down-rail with stairs on either side to finish. The girls were out in force with Emily Richardson and Rebecca Cullum both taking charge of the c-box. Mel Kern and Emily Williams looked to be some of the most daring competitors, choosing the huge “shark fin” as their rail of choice. But there was no stopping Laura Berry who landed one of the sickest lines of the day which included 50/50 along the shark fin ledge to frontside boardslide, pretzel out followed by a solid frontside boardslide on the down rail. The boys were killing it all night with a host of different tricks on all the rails. Jamie Nicholls was pulling off switch boardslide, gap 270’ out on the shark fin alongside Lil T (Tom Guilmard) who was doing stylish 50/50 to frontside 180’ no grabs off the top. Simon Foster was stunning everyone with his super steezy combos on the step-up box and frontside 270’ on 270’ off the downrail and Team Analog (James Carr and Ollie Plumley) were charging through the park matching each other trick for trick. After the judges had seen enough the ninety-minute jam session came to an end and the eight male and three female finalists were announced. They all made their way to the top of the slope to take the first of their final two runs. The best run counted so pressure was on to stick those tricks. Nate Kern had a strong run with some technical change-ups on the shark fin and frontside boardslide, pretzel tap-out on the down. Jason Thompson got an amazing final run involving a frontside 270’ lipslide on the down rail and Matt Higson rode with modest style all night on each of the features. Emily Williams landed a 270’ onto the c-box and earned her place in the super final alongside Laura Berry and Kirsty Tayler. Once all the shredders had completed their two runs the top three male and female winners were announced at the bottom of the slope in front of the huge Relentless Truck and were given their prizes. There was no rest for the Jamie and Emily as they had earned themselves a place in the Super Final, which was held straight after the prize giving. Burton Black Metal Rail Jam FinalThe final for the Burton Black Metal 2006 took place after the last leg of the tour at Milton Keynes. It kicked off around 10:30pm with all the riders looking ready to pull off their sickest runs on the four-piece rail set-up. The crowds gathered around the judge’s tent and at the bottom of the slope to cheer on some of the best rail riders in the UK. The format for the final was a two run, best-run counts arrangement. The riders had a choice of hitting one of the three rails at the top but the last rail (urban downrail) was compulsory. The finalists were the first place male and female winners from each leg of the tour. Simon Foster, Steve Owen, Chris Chatt, Neil Campbell, Jamie Nicholls, Kirsty Taylor, Laura Berry and Emily Williams all made their way up to the top of the hill to take their first runs. One of the first riders to drop in was Jamie Nicholls who stomped his switch boardslide, 270° to switch frontside on the shark fin. Simon Foster landed a textbook frontside 270, 270 off on the downrail to a cheer from the gathered crowds. Laura Berry showed she wasn’t messing about and Neil Campbell landed 50/50 to frontside 360 out on the last rail. But one of the most memorable moments of the evening was Steve Owen dropping in from the top of the park to clear the first part of the step-up, not making it and smashing his board on the front of the second box. It was the trick that put him through to the final at the Castleford event but he’d been struggling to land it on the day, as the ramp was slightly smaller at Milton Keynes. The undisputed winner had to be Chris Chatt, who landed cab 180 to 50/50 on the ledge, frontside boardslide on the down, pretzel out. Followed by front blunt, dainish out on the down rail…. Amazing. So he was awarded the fantastic board sports package including a surfboard, wakeboard, kitesurf board and skateboard. I still don’t know how he managed to fit it all in his little car. The Burton Black Metal crew would like to thank their sponsors Relentless, Anon, R.E.D, Gravis, Analog and the SNO!zone for all their help in setting up this year's event. And they are already in the process of setting up next year’s competition, which is allegedly going to be bigger and better than anything the UK snowboard scene has ever seen in the past. Look forward to it! The Burton Black Metal event page can be administered by dunx (Dunx), stu (Stu Brass), spencer (Spencer Claridge) and office (Office). Page views: 8618 |
