![]() Burton Black Metal
Burton Black Metal calls for all that are brave enough to come forward and unite against a new challenge.
The first of the four has emerged, leading its brethren for the first time to the Scottish city of Glasgow. Here riders came face to face with the four and saw what incarnation they had chosen to do battle with mortal man. Many gathered hoping to be the one to defeat the menace and as battle was waged, spectators were treated to an amazing display of skills. It was great to see the biggest turn out of ladies that Black Metal has ever had, with 18 of the fairer sex turning up to ride along side the men. Among this group you could find both seasoned professionals as well as near virgins to rails of this scale. Notable was Laura Hill freshly returned from NZ and showing not only what she’s learnt but a consistency that backs up her growing reputation as one of the UK’s ladies to watch. However the level of riding and design of the rails was pushing and allowing others to try things they had never thought of before and in some cases, whether down to luck or skill, early trepidation turned into landed tricks. The first round of glory for the ladies went to Perth local Kirsty Taylor who linked a blindside boardslide to fakie on the cbox to frontboard to switch on the sharks fin, followed by Steph Caller who though not quite getting boardslide to 270 out on the c had a solid enough run to keep her just ahead of Laura. The men's attack was lead early on by known warrior Stu Edwards taking a super stylish technicality to all rails with nollie front boards to pretzel and switch front boards. His lead was soon taken on and as trick bags were opened wide they came pouring out. Damian Doyle showed that spending time with the rails as they grew to fit his vision, helped him be relaxed in their presence and with such a lazy matter of fact style started pushing what was possible through the step up. Pretty soon we had Angus Leith switching it up and Jason Thompson bouncing along its length in similar style to Damo’s blindside boardslide, 180 upstep to 270 out. The street rail, ever popular, witnessed some close sparring, with Mark Watson's switch backside 270s on, Jason's cab 270 to front boards, but it was Simon Foster's 180 on to 270 out done super smoothly that caught the judges attention. The depth of talent pushed the riding and made for a great spectator event, but at the same time made it difficult for the judges to choose a few above the rest. However in the end the place on the trip to Mayrhofen went to Simon Foster followed closely by Jason Thompson and Damian Doyle who will get another chance at glory in the super final. With the first melee making it one nil to the shredders the four will re-group, change their formation and reappear at Castleford for the 7th October, bring yourself down and see what you can achieve in the face of adversity.
