![]() Burton Black Metal
Burton Black Metal calls for all that are brave enough to come forward and unite against a new challenge.
Now the slope has cleared after the confrontation at Castleford and time enough has passed to let wounds heal, let’s not forget that the four are also biding their time before again entering the field of battle. But first let us pass our mind back to the last time the they came forward, against the riders of Castleford. Having revealed themselves a few days early the local riders had a chance to skirmish and hone their skills before making battle for real on the snow of Snozone Castleford. After such a high standard at Breahead the judges were keen to see what the scene at CasVegas could produce, and they were impressed in no short supply. With the likes of Billy Nielson, Laura Hill, Stu Edwards and previous victor Simon Foster, returning to the fray, those that had not seen this years incarnations yet would have to be on form to match the tricks we have seen these guys pull out before. As it was the gauntlet was well and truly taken up and battle not only raged against Black Metals foe but between the riders. Coming to light in the men’s was a young Will Smith, who at 12 years of age, was not going to be daunted by the size of the rails or experience of others and with tricks like 5-0 up step to back tail 270 out had many asking his name and nodding in agreement that he could have a bright future. However the greater experience of Steve Owen and Chris Chatt paid off. Steve coming in second ahead of Will, as usual showing no fear for such features, even if they are big black, gnarly and claim to be from another dimension, approaching as usual at pace and whipping out such delights as 270 on gapping to the down of the sharks fin. But even Steve couldn’t match the smooth technical style of Chris, who as one of UK snowboarding’s regular stars demonstrated the text book switch frontside on the street rail to take the title, but as highest unsponsored rider Steve gets to join team Burton UK on the photoshoot. The girls again did just as much to entertain the crowd with just as deep a selection of both technical and crowd-pleasing tricks. Burton rider Posy Dixon logged a lovely backlip on the down rail to come in third, unfortunately for her bettered by Laura Hill with a back board gapping through the peak of the sharks fin, but despite such great displays Sylvia visiting from Austria demonstrated the advantages of having a home in the mountains and 270’d on to the C rail to place first on the women’s side. Now after a short break to nurse its wounds and regroup Black Metal will be returning to Tamworth on 4th November. Having seen such a depth of talent and been on the receiving end of so many tricks, the four are getting worried at what the riders of the UK have still to come, either way they know they are going to get it.
