![]() Burton Black Metal Rail Jam
A Black Metal Rail Jam, so you know it'll be good. Also an opportunity to demo some new Burton goodies like the famous cap-straps.
The focus for the evening was the Burton Black Metal rail. The rest of the slope was littered with rails and even a decent kicker, but they were fairly ignored by the assembled creme of UK freestyle intent on making their way through the ranks and on to the Burton European Open (all expenses paid) as the single winner of the event. The event was perhaps made a little more difficult by the Poma servicing the rail deciding to give up the ghost about half way through the evening, after having been on and off all night. This meant the competitors had to hike for much of the final rounds. I didn't know all the riders, but thought the local boys from the ATV Crew (Chris Chatt, Aly McMorland, Paul Rennie, Steve Revill) rode really well, John Weaver was pushing it and Ben McHugh, Jonny Russell, Charlie Clarke, Chris Schulz and Damian Doyle were also full of style. As usual Steve Owen from Tam was really giving it some along with JP Chalinor. For the younger riders Andy Rivers and Ben van Leeuwen were really impressive and Sam didn't let us down either and it's amazing how he's progressed over the last year The final came down to a showdown between Sam Cullum and "Edgar" (who I don't know), but the warm up, jam and final of the best 10, saw some great riding on the rail including a 180 on to 50/50 to front-side boardslide to 270 off. Pretty nifty, but the rail was awesome. A good 6 inches wide and with a super clean series of ramps on from the straight and from the side, it gaves the riders a heap of possibilities. As one spectator commented, "these guys have some serious style". Sam Cullum eventually walked away with the top prize, his third all expenses paid trip of the year.
