![]() Air Wars III - The Return of the Jibber
Following the success of “AirWars Episode II: The Dendix Strikes Back”, held in October last year, the AirWars crew are preparing the slopes of Bracknell for Episode III.
A long time ago on a dryslope far far away, well not so long ago, it was Saturday, and just a short drive around the M25 to be honest, but it felt like far far away on a Saturday morning. “Air Wars III, Return Of The Jibber” and the guys at Bracknell had laid on an excellent training ground for everyone. Padawan learners could sample the delights of the stellar choice of smaller ramps and rails, whilst hardened Jedi Masters could use the force to tackle the mighty Natives.co.uk gate rail and huge kicker, with a massive gap to knuckle, which caught many out. The guys had even planned a few surprises during the day to test everyone's mastery of the force. 50 or so Jedi had arrived for the battle, and a few skiers turned up to, representing for the dark side of the force. Air Wars III began. The format of the day was a slopestyle jam session, followed by a final and then by a big air jam session, with skiers voting for themselves. Everyone took a while to ease into the newest dryslope surface on the block, Perma-Snow, manufactured by Jawa’s on the desert planet of Tatooine. It took most riders a few runs to get used to this surface, a very fast, slippery matting, but once you’re used to it, it becomes the craziest fun. During the days proceedings Ben Copley was egging every one on to try stupid stuff for prizes, trouser less skiing, snatching prizes out of the quarter pipe and various other crazy tricks. I must admit, even with my years of training as a Jedi master, I was extremely impressed with the powers of the dark side, little skiers throwing down sick ski slides and some tasty 5s, and local ripper Web was stomping some sick 720s. But the mastery of the force displayed by the boarders was equal to anything the dark side could muster. The Knox brother, locals to Bracknell, were all throwing down tasty BS 3 grabs over the big kicker, and Ben Knox was hitting up sick BS 5s all day, and to top it all off he was rocking on a hire board. Cody Hierons was stepping up to the Knox brother’s, with some fantastic rail skills, 50-50 to nose presses on the up flat kink, combo-presses, front sides, backside, spins on and off every rail on the slope, this young Padawan was using the force to his full potential. POB was throwing down some tasty FS5s, and Master Gary Martin, the event organiser, was going crazy hitting up the biggest 3s of the day, and taking more than one heavy slam, which would have put the less hardened rider off. Sunny Elmore was putting up some nice switch 270 on 270 off on the Natives.co.uk gate rail, and local lad, Sam Cullam I think he was called, was pulling some average tricks, including corked 7s. For the girls Becca Cullum And Sam Rogers were once again pitted against each other, this has been a long standing battle of slope mastery, almost as old as Master Yoda. Both girls were equally matched in terms of rails skills, and when it came to kicker riding, although both girls possessed different bags of tricks, with Becca trying to stick her bs 3s and Sam pulling off some nice switch spins it was hard to separate the two. In the womens' category we saw Chatham crew member Emily Spicer, Kat from the Vermin crew, Posy Dixon and Emma “something or other” were up against each other. Stand out riding for the women came from Posy Dixon, with some huge 360s, clearing the knuckle over big kicker. Kat was hitting every rail with equal skill frontside and backside. Onto the big air, all I can say about this is Ben Knox BS 7, stomped. Good Work! A special treat was laid out for the end of the day, Gary Martin had managed to get his hands on some Ewok real estate, and had set up “Jibba The Hut”, a not very sturdy looking Ewok dwelling with a rail across the roof. The ramp onto the hut was a bit whippy and it was way to easy to clear the rail travelling at moderate speed, which made this a challenge to connect with the rail let alone ride the whole lot. Local guy Ross was getting some clean bs180s over the hut, Sunny Elmore was hitting some nice switch 270s onto the hut, and Cody and the Knox brothers were getting some clean FS presses. Before I forget, a big shout out to Galba for hitting kickers with a pint in hand, and not spilling a drop, and to the Dark Lord Darth Vader for turning up, if not a little late, and throwing down some keen kicker skills, not bad for some one with prosthetic legs. All in all a great day, the best Air Wars competition yet and to be honest the best dryslope competition of this summer and it was all for charity. [By Alex Spence] Total amount raised We have finally managed to get together all the monies promised to us and have now sent cheques of to our nominated charities, the British Heart Foundation and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Many thanks to all those competitors and spectators who came along to Bracknell to participate in or simply watch AirWars III: The Return of the Jibber and many thanks to David King who obtained a generous donation from Waitrose on our behalf. This year we managed to raise £948.92 which has been split equally between the two very worthwhile charities. Also many thanks go to those kind people who donated all our prizes Chalet Snowboard, Ski Deep, Westbeach, Ride, Nixon, SS20, Princes Shop, Stikup, Burton, Volcom, Special Blend, Onfire, howies, SP, Avalanche Sports, DC, Eastpak, Snow & Rock, Dragon, Mambo, Demon, SCUK, Blue Skin, KT Active and Vew-Do and also to Natives who sponsored the "Natives" rail.
