![]() Artificial British Slope Style Championships plus Boarder/Skier X, Halfpipe Jam Session.
During last weekend UK’s snowboarders and freestyle skiers met up at Sheffield Ski Village for the last leg of the Orange AIM Series, in association with O’Neill, 2004; the Artificial Slopestyle Championships. It was a great event that was completely ruled by UK’s amateurs and stars in the making. In the snowboard competition on the Saturday the riders had to fight strong winds but it didn’t stop them from throwing down 7’s in the pipe and over the hip. With the Ski Village’s strong freestyle following it was to no surprise that it was the locals that set the pace of the day. Peter Helliwell set of with a backside 7 over the hip followed by a McTwist in the quarterpipe, but unfortunately sketched his landing and was so beaten to third place by Jon Russell and his switch backside 7 over the hip on to a pretzel grind on the straight rail. In the fight for the champion’s title Matthew Gibson pulled out a solid frontside 7 in the pipe to charge straight into a frontside 5 to nose stall in the quarter, but that was not enough to beat UK’s next new big name in snowboarding Sam Cullum, High Wycombe. Cullum bagged himself another champion’s title with a smooth run of backside 7 Japan over the hip, followed by a McTwist in the quarter to finish of with a stylish boardslide on the bottom straight rail. In the women’s competition it was Liz Osbourne from London that took the title in front of Kat Marples from Brighton with a great run of fronside 3 in the pipe, to switch backside 180 over the kicker and a 50-50 grind on the straight rail. For the Sunday’s freestyle ski championships the sun came out and brought with it a great atmosphere amongst competitors and spectators. With half of the famous Ski Village freestyle ski posse not in competition it was definitely the big chance for some of the new names on the block to shine. Rising Sheffield stars Will Burrows and Charlie Richards together with Andrew Colin from Doncaster surely gave Ski Village legend Andy Bennett some stiff competition. In the earlier qualifier runs Charlie Richards brought down the house with his run of huge nosegrab to flare in the pipe, to a backflip over the kicker to finish with a railslide that qualified him first into the final but unfortunately his nerves got the better of him and he stacked his landings in both his final runs. The battle of the final was instead a close race between Bennett, Burrows and Collin. Burrows surprised the crowd with strong Lincoln Loops of the kicker and Colllin impressed with his corked 720 rotations but it was Bennett who, once again, took home the title with his innovative run of a 360 into the halfpipe, followed by safety grab and alley-oop mute through the pipe on to the kinked rail to finish with a backwards drop down from the quarterpipe. The Sheffield triumph continued in the women’s comp with Becky Hammond taking the title in front of Kim Vince, Nottingham, and Lorna Carmichael, Edinburgh with her mute grab and alley-oop in the pipe followed by 540 over the kicker.
