[By Soul Sports] RECORD TURNOUT FOR INDOOR SNOWBOARD AND FREESTYLE SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS AT XSCAPE With yet another record number of participants, the Orange AIM Series Indoor Boarder/ Skiercross Championships, in association with O’Neill, took over Xscape in Milton Keynes on Saturday 18th September 2004. SKIING With the largest number of ski competitors to date at any Orange AIM Series events, 80 skiers started the day’s competitions with some fears racing down the freshly shaped boarder/ skiercross course. Competing in heats of three through out the qualifying heats, the excitement soared when four finalists had to race head to head for the champion’s title. The Bates brothers, again, dominated the final and just like at Hillend back in August snowboarder Michael Bates was the fastest down the course, beating his brother Simon, Ben Londsdale and Mark Brassington. In the women’s competition British Skiercross Champion Victoria Sarsfield was the given favourite but could not keep up with Orange AIM Series ski queen Emma Londsdale who took the title with small margins. In the slopestyle competition it was very close between the two skiers that ruled the show; Jay Earles and Ted Foster. The slope, which was designed by the organisers and Xscape slope staff, included a straight rail to kinked rail to a wave box to finish with a flat box, giving the competitors plenty of choice and variety. In two very technical runs with 270 on to 270 off performed by both skiers, it was Jay’s switch approach on to the big kinked rail that earned him first place. Will anyone ever beat Emma Londsdale? She beat of stiff competition from Rebecca Hammond with a clean run of mute grabs, rail slides to 180 off the bottom box, to walk home with yet another first place under her belt. SNOWBOARDING In early afternoon while the ski prize giving took place in the snozone café, the snowboarders got ready to make their use of the champion’s course. With the indoor course being slightly narrow and shorter than a mountain course, the races were close and intense. The men’s final was a showdown between David Griffith and Luke Paull who both had been racing strong through out their qualifying heats. After a tense start Griffith grabbed the lead after coming in ahead through the first turn and held it all to the finish line, winning his first champion’s title. In the women’s final it was another tense race between local Laura Berry and Katie Young with Berry trusting her immense confidence to push a little bit harder to take the title. Laura’ winning antics did not stop there. In the later slopestyle jam format she was demonstrating just why she is UK’s reigning queen jibber. Without fear and in full speed she gapped to boardslide on the kinked rail, did a boardslide to 180 over the wave box and finished with a smooth tail slide on the flat box. The women’s competition was one of the day’s best with a great deal of talent and style on display with Lucy Passmore and Sarah Phillips throwing down boardslide to 180’s and combinations of boardslide to tailslide and 50-50 to boardslides in their quest to beat Berry to the first place. The men’s competition did not disappoint either. With the last two tickets to be won for the Red Bull Storm in Glasgow 25 September, the riders were out in force, pushing each other further and further. There were some impressive performances from all age categories, proving that the younger riders are the once to look out for. Winning the overall title and bagging himself a ticket to ride in Glasgow, junior rider Sam Cullum ripped the slope with his run of tailslide to 270 over the rail on to attacking the kinked with a switch 50 -50, to get style points for his cab 50-50 180 off the wave box and finishing with a 270 boardslide of the flat box. The last ticket for Glasgow went to overall second Nate Kern, whose run included a 450 to 50-50 on the kinked and a 180 to 50-50 on the wave box. Young local ripper James Carr finished third with tricks like boardslide revert on the kinked and cab 180 on to 270 off the wave box. While the pros and amateurs were shredding in the competition, with the support from the gathered spectators in the snozone café, 95 beginners tried the O’Neill snowboard and Trespass ski lessons on the nursery slope. Despite the large number of competitors the day went smoothly and within schedule and a good time was had by all. Next event will be the Orange AIM Series “Best of British” Big Air Invitational at the Daily Mail Ski & Snowboard Show art London’s Olympia on the 15th October, followed by the Artificial Boarder/ Skiercross Championships at Sheffield Ski Village on the 23/24 October.
