As per magic the skies cleared and there were sunshine at yet another Orange AIM Series national championships event; the Artificial Boarder and Skiercross Championships, Midlothian Ski Slope, 21/ 22 August 2004. Saturday - Snowboard Competitions Boardercross, National Championships In Saturday's snowboard competition 64 snowboarders from all over the UK competed in the Boardercross championships as well as in Slopestyle and Big Air competitions. In the championships the snowboarders were racing in heats of three over a fast course of woops, jumps and turns, utilising the full length of the Midlothian slope. The warm sunny weather slowed the course down a little but there was still action and few tense moments as local experienced alpine racer, Michael Bates, Edinburgh, battled his opponents Matthew Gibson, Sheffield and Craig Howie, Edinburgh to the front, taking the champion’s title. Bates showed his diverse abilities as he on the Sunday changed his snowboard to skis and took home the Masters Skiercross champion's title as well. In the women's competition it was UK’s dryslope queen and British Big Air champion Mollie Percival from Bury who showed strength and persistence as she won the overall title in front of Samantha Rogers, Reading and Dawn Gamble, Edinburgh. Slopestyle In the men’s Slopestyle comp it stood between two locals Craig Howie and Peter Weir, both Edinburgh, and young Jamie Nicholls (11 yrs), Halifax. With a very high standard of riding the competition was close. Howie impressed with a shifty to shifty over the two woops, to a corked 5 over the jump to finish with a 50:50 to boardslide on the kinked rail, beating Nicholls to the first place by one point. Weir finished third. More local talent was on display in the women's competition as Posy Dixon, Edinburgh, earned her first place with some technical skills and great style, beating Mollie Percival and Alexa Hohenberg, New Molden. Big Air It was definitely Craig Howie's day! He stunned the judges when he landed a perfectly executed backside 9 to the roars of the crowd, leaving Vic Boys, Bradford, and Matthew Gibson in second and third place respectively. This year Mollie Percival’s success does not seem to stop. Showing great talent on both snow and dryslope, Mollie is definitely the UK female snowboarder to watch out for this winter. In the afternoon Big Air competition she stole the show with her trademark trick backside 360 tailgrab and placed first in front of Posy Dixon and Nicola Cogan, Glasgow.
