The UK’s top Snowboarders and freeskiers descended upon Bracknell Ski Centre at the weekend, for the highly anticipated Orange AIM Series British Artificial Slopestyle Championships. Bracknell locals Samantha Rogers, Ben and Sparrow Knox and James Webb were on top form taking home medals and fending off fierce competition from nationwide competitors.

Snowboard

Jack ShackletonThe lack of sun certainly didn’t dampen spirits or deter competitors on Saturday as over 50 snowboarders descended upon Bracknell slope, for the National Slopestyle Championships. The warm up big air competition kick started the day’s event, with local riders Jack Shackleton and Becky Cullum showing visitors how it’s done. Jack threw down and a huge backflip to walk away with the overall title, whilst Ben and Sparrow Knox took second and third. Sparrow at only 12 secured his first ever overall men’s podium position with his super smooth and effortless 540’s. In the women’s competition Becky Cullum took top honours after she landed a perfect 360 off the big jump, leaving Liz Osbourn to take second and Samantha Rogers third.

Ben KnoxIn the afternoon’s Slopestyle competition it was great to see local rider Samantha Rogers secure gold and the National title, on home turf, after she linked together a clean run that included a grind to noseslide on 7m flat down rail and a big 360, which she had been trying to nail all day. Liz Osbourn took second with a noseslide along the box and a perfectly landed 360, whilst Laura Berry, who was nursing an injury, took third. Ben Knox, who had been on fire all day, took the prestigious men’s title and the Salomon’s Best Unsponsored award. His winning run included a 180 on, to frontside boardslide on the box followed by a huge backside 540 and a 270 on 270 off on the bottom box. 13 year old Jamie Nicholls took second with a switch boardslide to frontside noseslide on the box and a backside 540 to cab 180 tailpress on the box. Local lad Frazer Dainton, also impressed the judges and managed to clinch third place overall, after putting together a clean and consistent run.

Ski

The sunshine came out on Sunday for the ski competition and over 90 local’s inspired by the action and enticed by the cheers took advantage of the FREE beginner lessons on offer. Local lady Gay Cooper mentioned after her and her family gave skiing a go for the first time “we were all so excited to try it out as we had never done it before, and it was great that the whole family could learn together. We loved it that much we are definitely going to come back for more lessons at the slope”.

Over on the main slope the pro’s got underway warming up in the Big Air competition, with a variety of 540, 720 and attempted 900 rotations being performed over the jumps. Youngster James Woods took first place and bragging rights, after he spun a 360 and managed to double grab his skis mid air. Richard Martin took second with a stylish 360 nose grab and Bracknell local, James Webb performed a 540 reverse mute to take third. Teri Spencer took first in the women’s final after a switch 180 over the big jump and Shelley Jones and Kate Williams took second and third.

Things really hotted up in the afternoon with the start of the Slopestyle event. The standard of skiing was high with the youngsters taking charge, linking together some smooth, stylish and technical runs. In the women’s event Shelley Jones, who qualified into the final with ease, but unexpectedly fell in her first run of the final, left her championship hopes hindering on her final run of the day. Untroubled by the pressure, she managed to pull out a huge 360 and grinds on the boxes to take the title. Teri Spencer, who had been skiing amazingly all day, came in second and third went to youngster Kate Williams. Local junior ripper James Webb was first on the slope and last off. His hard work and training paid off, and after his faultless 540 reverse mute spins, and switch grinds on the boxes and rails in the final, he was crowned the 2006 Artificial Slopestyle Champion. James Woods, at only 14 came in a close second after a switch 270 grind on the box and a huge 360 tail grab over the jump. Renowned for his technical rail combinations, Charlie Smith took third after being the only skier to successfully 270 on and 270 off on the bottom rail.
