The Orange AIM Series Championships at Ski Rossendale over the weekend (17 – 18 September) was one of the best this year! While 180 FREE snowboard and ski lessons were exploited on the nursery slope the competition atmosphere was amazing during both days as both riders and skiers pulled out all stops to impress the judges.

With a start field of 50 snowboarders from across the country it was set to be a great day for competition. The morning started with the National dryslope Boardercross Championships. The course that started with whoop-rollers into the first turn was short but fast. In the women’s competition Mollie Percival met competition from Samantha Rogers and young newcomer Holly Aird but managed to defend her title as Boardercross Champion. In the men’s final it was a much closer battle. After commotion at the top leaving Matthew Gibson and Harry Kingsley-Jones on the floor, the race was on between Scotland’s Michael Bates and Sheffield’s Peter Helliwell. Through the very last gate Bates, a seasoned alpine racer, picked a tighter line through the turn passing Helliwell as he sped into the finish and yet another Boardercross title. Gibson got in third just before Kingsley-Jones.

Moving on to the afternoon’s Big Air competition, the high standard of riding soon set the pace. Tom Percival stood out with the biggest airs all day as did young rider Zach Culshaw who qualified highest into the final. Colum Mytton received the biggest cheer of the day when, during the Jam Session, managed to pass his helmet between his legs as he performed a perfect backflip – a true showman trick - twice! The competition was later won by young Jamie Nichols (13 yrs old) who stunned judges as he landed a super clean backside 900. Second place went to Daniel Gosling for a nice and smooth backside rodeo and Percival finished third with his corked backside 7 mute. In the women’s competition four times Dryslope Big Air Champion and British Champion 2004, Mollie Percival was unbeatable. Trying 7’s all day she finally stole the show with her solid backside 360 tailgrab, taking home another first place before Samantha Rogers’ half cab and Gemma Marshall’s frontside 180.
