![]() Orange AIM Series - Bracknell
![]() British Artificial Slopestyle Championships, plus Big Air. With new ‘permasnow’ surface Bracknell offer tubes, boxes, new quarterpipe and a variation of kickers and rails.
This was the first of the AIM Series events and according to the riders a really well organised affair. Many of the riders were experiencing PermaSnow for the first time and found it fast, but difficult to edge. Bracknell is a good slope, but would be a great slope if it had a decent landing off the kickers, so a good few riders were certainly "feeling it" the next day whether that was from falls or heavy landings. The A.K.A crew locals from Halifax pretty much ruled the day for the men. Wayne Taylor, Jamie Nicholls, Richard Campbell and Richard Tyas took home a good few prizes. Along with the rest of the crew (including their rather large entourage of supporters) they kept the large crowd stoked all day long. Jamie is simply amazing on the kickers and styled on the rails. His mentor Wayne was one minute tail/nose/tail sliding the 10 foot box at the top and the next, nose/tail/nose sliding on the next run and using the whole course to great effect. Richard Tyas was again looking great and has really upped his riding as shown at the recent Cock o' the North event at Halifax. One of the older Halifax riders, Mark Ormerod was also proud father of Katie Ormerod, the day's youngest entrant at 7¾ and still grabbing off the small kicker. The Halifax riders surely show what a great kicker can do for the collective riding of the locals... subtle hint to John Nike's Bracknell. Locals riders Sam and Rebecca Cullum were also stand outs on the day. This is their local slope, but they'd had to travel back from holiday in the SW for the event. Sam looking really strong after his back injury at the Brits earlier in the year. Also back from Brits injury was Liz Osbourn who had crept into the Master category, but who is still 29 (she told us through gritted teeth). As Kat Miller put it "anyone that's still stomping 3's with a busted shoulder is welcome to beat me anytime". Kat took a nasty knock off the AIM Series rail and slid the down section on the back of her knees before dumping unceremoneously doubled up on her back from four foot up... and then carried on with her run over a kicker and rail. As MC Tim Warwood put it, "I'd be in tears if that was me". Somebody who I hadn't seen ride before but who impressed was Daniel Gosling, who was corking it off the quarter pipe at the bottom and generally looking too tall for his age. Cody Hierons and Luke Paull also rode well, but saved their best for High and Dry at Chatham the next day when "Dendix makes you ride better!" For the ladies, Posy Dixon and Samantha Rogers also deserve a mention for not only hitting the big kickers and big rails, but doing it with some considerable style. But that's not just what the AIM Series is about. Over 100 people had a chance to try out snowboarding for the first time and the majority seemed to be getting to grips with heel and toe edge on Bracknell's great PermaSnow lesson slope. The Series is also a chance for people to compete no matter what their level. With that in mind, a big well done to everybody who came and had a go, skidded out on the fast surface, stacked, straight aired, made their first grab, but undeniably had a good time. [By Dunx] The 2005 Orange AIM Series got off to a great start at the Bracknell Ski Centre over the weekend of 6th & 7th August 2005, attracting over 250 competitors and spectators for the British Artificial Slopestyle Championships. A further 100 locals also enjoyed the 125 FREE beginner lessons. The younger generation of competitors raised the bar in both disciplines giving the older and more experienced riders a run for their money. SnowboardSaturdays snowboard competition set the standard for the weekend with an amazing display of technical tricks and huge airs. 12 year old Jamie Nicholls broke the AIM Series record book for the youngest British Artificial Slopestyle Champion to date. With a stylish technical run that consisted of a 270 on 270 off box combination, a 540 tail grab and a double hand plant on the quarter pipe. Second place went to Wayne Taylor with his rail slide trickery, including his trade mark trick of the day noseslide / tailslide / noseslide on the flat box and half cab nose slide on the bottom rail. 16 year Richard Campbell who started snowboarding after the Orange AIM Series Schools tour visited his school two years ago came third with a smooth and stylish run, including a boardslide to fakie on the top rail going into a switch 180 over the jump. In the women’s competition the standard was high with rotations and rail combinations. Liz Osbourn came first with a boardslide to fakie on the kinked rail and a big clean 360 over the jump. Second went to Posy Dixon with her stylish jibbing skills and 360’s over the jump and third place went to local rider 15 year old Rebecca Cullum, hitting the big kinked rail and spinning 360’s off the smaller jump.
