Post subject: size 10uk = wide board?  PostPosted: Jan 19, 2006 - 05:05 PM

hi,

I was told by several different shops that i have to get a wide board. Im size 10uk in skate shoes and size 11US or 11.5US in snowboard boots depending on the boots.

Ive always set up my rental gear before now in duck freestyle, -15/+15, so I reckon that should make my overall footprint a bit shorter in relation to the board...

I was hopin to get a ride dh which has a waist width of 25.4cm.

has anyone else got size 10uk feet on a "narrow" board?

I feel like ill be making a big mistake if I ignore the advice of the people in the shops...

whats the deal with using riser plates? are there any drawbacks?

thanks!!!

A few different online shops and my local shop. The fact they all said i need a wide board made me think id be eating snow permenantly on a narrow board....

i got the feeling they were erring on the side of caution.
maybe they really did just want to shift a wide board.

thats really lame if thats the case.

I've got pretty much the same size feet as you - and haven't got a wide board.
Also got Burton boots - which generally tend to have a wider footprint - and still no heel/toe drag.
Got a Ride no 4 which has a waist width of 253 - so you should be fine.
If in doubt demo some - and try a few different stances with different bindings.
Sure you will be fine - but always best to check for yourself.

Batesy's got big feet too - and he hasn't gone for a wide board.

If your still a bit nervous about getting a normal board, some manufacturers do mid-width boards which are somewhere between normal and wide (eg. Burton Triumph or Burton Royale), or you could get a normal sized board with either risers built-in (K2 Recon Riser), or get some Palmer Power Link plates which you fit under your bindings and provide some extra overhang space when cranking your board over (avoiding toe/heel drag).

ignore him, you do not need mid wide or risers at all dude. size 10 boots will be fine, i should know ive been riding it with no problem for a year and a half. your stance configuration will help too.

I had been lookin at an apo mtd 159 with a 264 waist as an alternative.
I really prefer the ride board though, plus its a twin tip.

I couldnt find any decent twintips which were wide that I liked....

I definately dont want a wide board if I dont need it....

The guy asked for advice - I'm just trying to give him a few alternatives with as much info as possible - not telling him what to buy or saying that what other people are saying is wrong.

Unlike some...

Bravo! And good use of the inline URL tags too. I have to agree that boards specifically engineered around a US 10.5 (UK 10) sized boot such as the Triumph and Royale should be considered. I myself have grabbed a Triumph this year.

But yeah, i've heard wide boards are super hard to initiate turns on.

If i was you i'd go with regular width board, from what i've seen most people with size 10+ feet do this anyway...

thanks to everyone for thier opinions.

im gonna mull it over some more and then order what ever one i decideon tommorow....

I appreciate that wider boards are designed like that for a reason (eg bigger boots) but I also dont really want to spend my money on a board Im not really into, just because its a few millimemters wider.
I had heard from friends that the wider boards can be slow to turn so that puts me off a bit as well.

At the moment im leaning towards getting the ride dh and trying it out, if its a disaster then ill get some of those Palmer Power Link plates as suggested by Bart....

thanks again!
