Yes, you should put some on. Think about how you stand on a board. With your knees bent the lower part of your leg will lean forward at an angle. When on you toe and and you want to turn onto you heel edge you push your calves into the highbacks to push the board over. If the highbacks have no forward lean then you will have to move quite a way until your calves press against them.

Stand on your board. Assume the position, get someone to lean your highbacks until they almost touch your calves. Sorted.

I recommendation I saw (from a well respected instructor), was to put maximum lean on, and then back it off until you no longer found it impossible to ride.

Above all just remember, pain never hurt anyone!

first hire board i used in austria had no forward lean and i didn't twig till halfway thro the afternoon - had already spent 5 hours finding toe to heel edge turns impossible.
10 minutes with a screwdriver and i could turn again!!!!
Had about a 2" gap between the highback and my calf when i was in a comfy position for riding.

easier way is to just put your boot into your binding and adjust it so its flush wit hteh back of your boot, and start from there.....

If you like to 'carve' like myself, it does help with forward lean. I have my Burton Customs set on a forward lean of F5 out of 6!!! LEAN I teal ya! Also, it really does help when you are riding in icey conditions. I do recommend however, that you reduce the lean when in the park!

If your bindings dont let you adjust the lean, they can't be up to much!

Best bet is to experiment. I never used to have any on - have now started playing about with it a bit this year. Just like binding angles try some changes - different settings work for different people.
