I was there in March 05.
My first boarding holiday so I can't speak for the black runs but I certainly had a great time on the rest of the area.
The snow conditions were good and the on slope facilities were excellent if not a little pricey (as per all French resorts I beleive).
The town in my opinion was pretty dire, I enjoyed Val thorens much more, but there are quite a few bars and clubs. The standard of food in the pricey restaurants leaves a lot to be desired. I will definately stick to Pizzas etc in future.
The one thing that really impressed me the most is the feeling of scale. Everything is a 'big' operation from the main lifts through to the huge ski area available.
I'm going back on 7th Jan to have a go at some of the huge number of slopes I never got on to last time!
Have a top time

I've been once before, a good number of years ago. We broke a window frame, i.e. we managed to knock the whole frame out. Much of the rest is a blur. Doesn't one bar have a slide down to the lower levels?
On the mountain it was all good thought, with the Oh Feck lift being well known. There's some very big off piste areas, although sometimes mean a walk back along the road. Rest of the mountain has some good terrain though.
Since I went, I know the park has been vastly improved so can't really comment on that.
The SCUK Winter Bash heads into town on 21st January for a week. Places still available of course from £234 including lift pass and accomodation. |

dunx,
I also remember the bar with the slide in it - I think many people do more injuries to themselves on it than on the slope! The bar did have lots of promotions on during the week I was there so it was quite good. Also was the nicest bar inside that I went to.
I think the lift you are talking about is nicknamed the 'scare chair' which goes under the airstrip, down a valley and up the other side. There are lots of huskys to go ansd see over there as I remember.

alp d'huez is sick
go as far up as you can and ride the off piste up there, if you go through the tunnel be warned, its a bloody steep (but bloody fun) balck on the other side!
never partyed there but the riding is great.
Noddy Gowans, the big mountain skier, loves riding there as its a great place for off piste. If its good enough for him, it's got to be good! |

and it has the longest run in europe or something right? i've been 3 times tho and its never been open past the glacier.
we went to a restaurant place called l'outa last year the day before it officially opened. the owner was like an alcoholic basil fawlty who owned his own bar. not a good combo! it was quality tho. |

Might have the longest black run, but the bottom 2/3rds is the flattest longest cat track you can imagine. Hell on Earth. The Sarenne I think it's called.
I just got really excited. I had to control myself there. |

went to alp d huez in feb 05 had a wicked time. some good red and blacks from the top of th pic blanc but they do rely on good weather. the sarenne is called the longest black run in europe but its more like a red and even a blue in a lot of places, still good fun though. didnt do the tunnel (from top of pic blanc near the sarenne) but my mates did and said it was pretty hardcore.
Auris was a good laugh, very fun greens and blues to piss about on through the trees.
nightlife was ok, a couple of good bars, went down the slide and hurt myself too! go to the Garage, nicely chilled bar and eat plenty of pizza! |

dunx, you are so right about that cat track, but there is some great off piste off that run too, at the cat track i found not one but 2 or even 3 decent skiers to give me a tow!
The tunnels is just at t he top of the pic blanc, yes near sarenne. It was my idea to go through it, oh how i regretted it when we got to the other side, but it ended up being well worth it! not sure i'd do it again in a hurry unless there was tons and tons of fresh pow to be had, which was admittedly the case the first time we found it!
great resort you will have fun i'm sure |
