Morning all,

Was just wondering if anyone has got, or has used a balance board for general core muscle strengthening and if they're any good?

Am considering buying one, but before I splash the cash on something that may just end up being another dust collector in the house, I was just after any views on them?

So, are they worth the money? And if so, any recommendations on make / type to look for? I've seen general round shaped ones, or more board like shaped ones....

Ta very muchly Smile

Bottle of water and an old (truckless!) skate deck. Gives you tip to tail and rail to rail movement so more akin to snowboarding and more of a workout, plus it's cheap!

If you want a more indo board feel, then a sealed section of PVC pipe with some sand in can replace the bottle of water (seen some guys wrap the pipe in grip tape to make it a bit more stable). The more sand you have the harder it is to roll and so you can vary resistance and if you fancy being billy big balls you can always get a wider diameter pipe!

I used one specifically as part of physio after an ankle injury. That was a wobble board, a different action from anything with a roller. It was good for that purpose. Otherwise, well I'm not sure it will do much for your "general core", but they're handy for working on your balance. A slack line is another possibility to consider (best bought in the US unless you're rich).

Personally I'm not really a fan of skate style balance boards such as the View Do.
Just buy a skate board and go skating instead.

I do really rate the Indo board. It allows you to do surf style moves, that I think really translate well with snowboarding (being stacked).

All balance boards will strengthen ankles in a way that other exercises don't. That is good.

If you have the cash for an Indo go for it.

I'm doing something similar with a wobble cushion at the moment, to try and rebuild the strength in my knee after surgery. Like Phil said, I don't know how much good it is doing my general core, but I'm really feeling it on my quads and hamstrings after a squat session.

There are dozens of exercises you can do on a balance board to strengthen your core, just search for balance board exercises and there will be multiple sources. They really are good because of the constant adjustments you have to make. I rate using them in conjunction with dumbells/kettlebells or a medicine ball and getting creative.

Just out of interest, are you talking about balance boards (the ones that roll from side to side on a skateboard type deck) or wobble boards (the round ones on a ball)??

I'm thinking that the wobble boards would be the better shout as you're not only adjusting your balance from side to side, but through the whole 360 degrees? That is, unless the balance boards rock forwards and backwards as well, but as they're on a roller I can't see it somehow??

Both. There are a lot around for the vew-do boards since they were trying to flog them through personal trainers.

I have always been a fan... they last longer than the bottle trick and you have a bit more flexibility

We have them and your SCUK discounts apply to all of them Smile

Hi

I've just bought a "Cool Board" today.

I've been thinking about it for a while and after some research i found the "Cool Board", it gets good reviews due to the range of motion as the board balances on a ball rather than a cylinder. Check it out see what you think.

Got to admit that as much as this looks like the worst spam post ever, this is the one that I kept on looking at after doing a t'internet search due to the range of movement. However I've got to agree with Dashie's sentiments, there's no way I'm splashing out a ton on what is effectively a plank of plywood and a ball....

It is a lot of money but i'll try it out then strap on my board see if i get the same results. If I get the same results with my board on i'll return the cool board get my money back and buy myself a £10 ball, happy days cheap balance board.
