Post subject: Les Deux Alpes or Alpe d'Huez

Hi,
I'm looking at visiting either Les Deux Alpes or Alpe d'Huez this winter and could do with any advice/guidance as I'm not sure which resort would be best suited to us?
I am a beginner; I've mastered my turns and now just need to work on my speed and confidence to progress. We went to Whistler this February and I found the runs there ideal. I am also a bit of a wimp when it comes to drag lifts, so I like to avoid them!! 
My partner is an intermediate and likes to spend some time in the park.
We would be looking to travel in late January or March, at the moment January would be more suitable with work etc. however, any experience or recommendations would be much appreciated

It depends how big a a park rat your partner is?
If he is really into his freestyle, then Les Deux Alpes wins hands down. If he is only looking for an occasional run through the park, then Alpe D'Huez might be better suited. The park there is beside one of the blue main runs into the top of the town and you can get the DMC gondola back up. In fact, most of the runs in ADH are nice long blues or reds with gondolas or 6-man chairs.
If you're tending towards March, then it might be worth considering that European Gay Ski Week (or something like that) is happening in ADH around then. The British Uni Championships are looking at both resorts for the end of March (hence why I know about the Gay Ski week... before anyone suggests otherwise) and its looking likely that they'll go to L2A as a result (although that hasn't been confirmed yet). |

| ADH hands down on every aspect except for advanced level park. |

Thanks for getting back to me and for the information!
I think I'm leaning towards ADH, do you have any recommendations for accommodation? We had looked at Les Lutins in LDA, which is affordable in a good location and would be looking for something similar to this is ADH? |

| Don't forget that a 6+ (?) day pass in either will give you a day in the other (if that makes sense). We got the helicopter between the two once, which was fun. I think it also includes another resort too, so basically, which ever of the three you go to, you can try out the others. |

Been wondering the same myself looking at next year.
I was leaning toward L2A because its easier to find accommodation. ADH seems to be more spread out with many different villages and I wasnt sure which to stay in. |

Yep, its a day at Serre Chevalier that is also include in a 6+ day pass (which is worth a visit on flat light days as they've got loads of tree runs).
Most tour companies will run bus trips to the other resorts and like Dunx says, there is a always the heli option (it was about £65/person a few seasons back). |

ADH is marketed as having different quarters, but really they all just merge into one village (unless you're right up past the airport). |

I think there's a free shuttle. It was £30 when I did it, but that was back when everything was in black & white. Both resorts are good, so I would worry too much.
If you struggle on very flat or very steep slopes, then the run back down to the town at L2A isn't much fun as it has loads of both, although you can wuss out and download via the cable car. LDH is easier on that front. SCUK has done both for the Winter Bash in the past. |

Thankoo for all the information
We have also found it easier to locate accommodation in LDA, so it's good to know that ADH kind of merges in to one big village! Any recommendations of good, affordable places to stay in ADH?
I've had a look at the helicopter, looks super fun and the price isn't too bad really, as it would be an experience!
I'm ok to a point of flat spots, not a fan of steep though! I've read in a few places that the runs back in to LDA are not great, which is why I was leaning towards ADH. |

Most of the ADH accomodation seems to be in Vaujuny and Oz en osians which look kind of out of the way of the main ADH slopes.
petch, i have been using mainly http://www.ownersdirect.co.uk to look for palces. These are apartments to rent mainly, so you would have to arrange your own flights, transfers, food etc. |

That's what I am finding with the locations too.
I've been looking on Owners Direct too, but again seem to find far more in L2A. We were looking to arrange it all independantly as we are only able to fly from Bristol on the Sunday, which tour operators don't offer!
When are you hoping to head out there? |

Current plan is for the 19th Jan I think. One of the group has rota'd holidays so depends on them.
Where were you planning to fly to? Bens Bus do transfers from Grenoble to ADH for £45 pp return which is pretty good. |

We looking at around the same time in Jan because it's easier with work.
Looking to fly in to Grenoble.....that's a really good price for the bus hopefully it will work out a bit cheaper than going with an operator.
So you definatley going to go with ADH? There are a few appartment in Eclose, which doesn't look too bad location wise. |
