Hi All

I know it's only June, but all this rain is making me sad so I need to start planning snow trip 2012/2013 to cheer me up!

Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations for somewhere cheap in Europe to go to, that has a proper Alpine/chocolate-box feel to the place, good for intermediate boarders (with some parks/freestyle areas - hopefully I'll be good enough by then!)??

Been to Andorra the last couple of years so looking for somewhere different!

thanks Smile

Sophie

Hi Sophie

Welcome! I'm pretty new here too

The cheapest place I've been that kind of fits your description is Mayrhofen in Austria.

It's got a good park and a fair amount of terrain, is a fairly cute town with a couple of really good bars and cheap food (the place opposite the Ice Bar is amazing), at least compared to French and Swiss prices.

The only thing is when we went the snow wasn't great, but that was a pretty poor winter all round.

Good luck

P.s. I know EXACTLY what you mean about planning your next trip! In fact we've just booked our flights for new years......

If you want Alpine/chocolate-box fee then its Austria all the way. Forget france most of the resorts there are ugly as sin and about as traditional as Hackney, apart from the smaller not so well known more 'french' ones but they tend to me small.

Mayrhofen is good but full of English teenagers getting wasted and listening to Dub-step, which kind of ruins any chance of a traditional Alpine feel.

How about zell am see? V nice and chocolate-boxy, especially with the lake in the town and mountains surrounding them.

Decent mountain at Zell and have Kaprun glacier (kitzsteinhorn) on the same lift-pass (30ish mins on a free bus), so snow-sure even with a poor season - ok-ish park at Zell but 2 quite large ones on glacier.

Been there a couple times and would happily go back.

got a week there with flights and accommodation in town for £195 last season (with the bad snow) as a last min deal with Crystal - so can be pretty affordable too Wink

If you're all intermediates then have home-runs (red to a free bus-ride away, or blacks to home-town) at the end of the day. Maryhoffen is ace (been there too) but the lack of home-run and necessity to queue at the end of the day (as well as the start) is a little frustrating. Saying that, it's a bigger resort, with a bigger park, but a little more expensive and attracts a LOT of "brits abroad".

+1 for Zell am See, we were there for Christmas last year and it was a great place (was actually pretty cheap for Christmas, last minute with Neilson - think half board for less than £600 each). Really nice traditional alpine village, nothing like the purpose built French resorts! We had great snow (as I think most places did last year) so we didn't make it over to Kaprun but we had enough to keep us entertained for a week!

There are some fairly cheap, easy on the eye resorts in France that are usually not on the British tour operators' lists.
Have a look at Saint Jean d'Arves. It's very small, all wooden with nothing higher than 4 floors and a handful of shops, bars & restaurants. Not much good if you want to go clubbing every night but all the accommodation is a short walk from the lifts (although there is a shuttle to Saint Sorlin 2km up the valley, which has more nightlife).
It's in the Les Sybelles domain which gives you over 300km of piste, a couple of parks and loads of easy off-piste. The most 'intermediate' resort I've been to.

Another thumbs up for Zell/kaprun. Kaprun is a bit quite in the evening, the one main bar where everyone goes is excellent. The glacier is closer, only 10/15 minutes on the bus if you stay in Kaprun. Only a nice 1 3/4 hour transfer from salzburg aiport. Very cheap to eat out, even on the glacier. The alpine cafe is excellent, good food and cheap. But lets not tell everyone about it! I am trying to get back three times this season. Very Happy

If you're looking for that 'Chocolate Box' feel you CANNOT beat the Jungfrau Region in Switzerland. It consists of Wengen (where they hold one leg of the downhill skiing world cup) Murren, and Grindlewald. You have amazing views of the Eiger, Super long runs from the Schilthorn and good parks in First and Murren. Really good for intermediates.

I've been going there for years, got family there which helps!

One thing is, it's not cheap, as Switzerland never is! Other thing is some of the areas aren't brilliantly linked, a few mountain railways etc. But for picture-postcard mountain scenery, it can't be beat and if you stay in the right area (Wengen is best) you can get to the best runs easily.

I've been to Zell and liked it but towards the end of the season it can struggle for snow as town is only 600m above sea level. I've also been to St. Anton in Austria and would recommend that for a good combination of intermediate runs and a nice town with decent night life. I think all the Austrian resorts benefit from being towns that existed before the surrounding area became a ski resort and so they have a full range of local amenities.
