I like you had never been in powder when i decided to do a season in Fernie.
Heard all about the magical stuff but never riden it so first day of the season resort opened and i fell on my ass an infinite number of times frustrated and worn out from just trying to get up i went back to the house wondering what the hell i had done.
So some of the guys who had ridden it before gave me a few lessons and once my confidence builded and i got the technique my god there is no better feeling.
We had 90cm in 48 hours later in the season and it was so light and so much you pretty much had to straight line even the blue runs (equivalent of Europe red runs)
The time i really really fell in love with powder though was about mid season so i was riding pow pretty good by now even on my park board and noticed that they had opened up polar peak chair (about the 15th time of the season) and saw a way to get onto the Currie headwall. I don't think anyone had noticed as everyone else going up the chair headed to the polar chutes i went to the wall and dropped into a completely fresh line a few turns and it felt better than sex. No other lines down that face no feeling of hard snow underneath just soft champagne powder its how i imagine a hover board being...
After that feeling of riding steep and deep I only wanted more so i've done my AST level 1 (Avalanche skills training) and got my backcountry gear.
Seriously get a good teacher for pow maybe a new board and you WILL fall in love if there is pow on the mountain you won't be heading anywhere else on the hill even the park (sorry park rats) |

| We had a powder day in Les Arcs today, 11th April... I'm still grinning despite my thighs screaming now.... 'Riding a cloud' from an earlier reply, almost gets it. Everything is less effort and in untracked you can go faster than sensible, with hardly a sound except people screaming at the feeling |

I've rode some fresh P.N.W "cement" and some Lake Tahoe powder pack..but this year in Europe I had the light dry champaign powder...Stupid grin fest.
Putting your tail down on a turn..and there's nothing there, the noise of the snow..and then the face shot. Its about as good as it gets. |

God, you guys are making me want to jump back on a plane tomorrow. I've got some mates heading to Chamonix for a stag this weekend. They're doing a day's full-on back country with a guide and it sounds like the snow is going to be epic. I should be with them but just don't have the cash right now.
I think this thread should be locked. I don't want to think about champagne powder under a bluebird sky until next season when I'll have a chance to get out there again  |

Sorry... but another powder day in Paradiski.
Unreal as the apple blossom is out at the funi midstation, about 1200m.
The valley is green and last week the mountain bikers were out in force. |

| Got to agree with everything above about Powder. Introduced my wife (as a skier) to powder on her first holiday and suddenly she understood what all the fuss was about. I kept hearing lots of giggling as she skied behind me and the big plus is if you do fall over, it really does not hurt! |

| keep out of the trees until you have sussed out the technique. Best bet is to start by slicing a few corners or riding down the side of the piste. As your confidence increases, head out into the deep stuff but, the deeper the pow, the steeper the gradient needs to be if you expect to be falling over. Wiping out in deep pow on a shallow gradient is like falling into a pool and not being able to swim! |

Nail on the head! first day riding powder at ADH in January this year and launched into a huge area of waste deep fresh and took ages to get out! |

Try getting hold of Snowboard Addiction videos. Full of good illustrative tips for a lot of levels and types of riding including Powder.
Heading out to Whistler at the end of the year and planning to do a day or 2 SnowCat which looks like a challenge but a potential adrenaline high if I can keep off my ass. |

Powder Mountain is a good day out Cat skiing. As long as the group is the same level you'll have a good day.
If you have a nice clear day you'll head high into the bowls, but if its an over cast day you'll be in the trees and both are as good as each other.
The only thing, if you want steep lines you wont get them as its for people of all levels. |

Riding powder is what snowboarding is all about!! Park is just for those who don't live in the powder zone!
When you are slashing turns thru virgin powder, you'll wonder why you ever wasted so much time on-piste and in the park. When you get that day, with faceshots at every turn, blue sky, out with your mates and no one else around....then you'll look back at this post and say "aha!! now I get it!" |

| Can you imagine riding a cloud ? Based on my time in powder that's my view of it loved every second of it |
