You said getting trollied then learning to snowboard was a good idea, which is stupid. Sorry of some of us dont think that makes you really cool and that you think we are do gooders for pointing this out.
Im also sorry that people dissagreeing with your hugely knowledgable opinion is just because of a pack mentality, obviously its impossible for people to dissagree with you for any other reason because your opinion is just so right. |

It was some advice i gave (as a beginner) to another beginner. It didn't sit well with some snowboarding veterans. Hey ho. I didn't intend malice but got a bucket-load.
I know people can disagree with me but i don't see why i can't point out when people are wrong in doing so. |

And i will continue to snowboard with n00bs like me every week and i'll help and talk to anyone who approaches me at Cas/CFe, regardless of how you see my input on this forum. Not that i needed your approval to carry on doing so.
This forum seems like fun but i'm far more interested in what fruits it brings on the slopes for me  |

Dude you said something that is widely considered stupid, not just amongst 'veterans' but also amongst 'sensible people' of all skill levels, and has been for the 8 or do years this forum has existed. If you want to dissagree then thats your bag.

Can’t resist sticking my oar into this argument, not that I think it will make any difference reading the thread but here goes. . .
Using the argument that you haven’t crashed into anyone yet so its all okay reminds me of the bloke that jumped off a 30 storey building, as he sailed past the 10th storey window on the way down he was heard saying “so far so good, so far so good”.
And we’re talking about beginners who presumably want to become better snowboarders, that means practise and working on your technique all the time, which means you have to think about and analyse what you’re doing.
Having a few/many whatever number of beers might give you a misplaced sense of confidence and help you get down the slope but I’m sorry, if you’ve had enough beers to give you more confidence then your judgement is impaired and you’re not going to improve.
If you’re nervous, whether it’s linking turns or hitting a kicker, surely you can see that working on your technique until you reach the point that you believe you’re a good enough snowboarder so as not be nervous anymore is better advice than just drinking enough beers not to care? |

I'll sum up why a few of us think that your advice is terrible, especially on a thread titled "Newbie Tips".
- Getting inebriated (even mildly) affects your judgment. It's likely that that you'll take risks on a snowboard that you otherwise wouldn't. It's risky enough when you're learning, why make it more so?
- These risks might include riding faster than you normally would, trying something you haven't been able to do sober. Your reactions are slower when you've had a drink so you're more likely to fall and hurt yourself or crash into someone else when you're out of control.
- If you snowboard whilst under the influence abroad and hurt yourself you will in all likelihood not be insured. If you hurt someone else whilst snowboarding under the influence then criminal charges can be brought against you. I'm not scarmongering there, it's a fact.
No one would argue that it's down to you if you want to take these risks, it's not just you on a slope though is it.
People should develop their confidence through practice, then they'll have the appropriate skills and a good foundation to progress safely. |

Also the idea that there's a difference between driving a car and riding a snowboard whilst drunk is a fallacy. Both are capable of killing people when out of control and you're probably less likely to kill another car driver in a crash than you are to kill another snowboarder because the other car driver is protected by their car with its airbags, etc.. So arguably it's more irresponsible to board when drunk than to drive as the risk of killing someone is potentially higher!
I'm not a fan of health and safety and excessive regulation and believe that people should be expected to use their common sense and judgement. My common sense tells me that snowboarding after just one beer might be legal but it's a good recipe for hurting myself and other slope users! |

You really do miss the point dont you?
You've (quite spectaculary - is that spelt right?) missed the point AGAIN by comparing me to a drink driver of a car.
And you ask i've I'VE missed the point? The ironing is delicious.
Why can't you compare drink snowboarding and drink driving? People die as a result of car crashes and people die from snowboarding/ski accidents. Just look at Natasha Richardson, she died on a ski lesson! |
