Does anyone know where to go mid April in the US? My wife has 14th to 21st off and we were planning on heading to Park City for a few days then driving down to Vegas past all the Utah sites. Problem is i just found out its closing on the 10th. Gutted. Other option was Tahoe but they all close on the 11th. Its been a rubbish year over here so i guess stuffs not opening so late but does anyone know what traditionally is the Tignes of the states?
I think Mt Baker might be open till the end of April but i know nothing about it, given my wifes only done 16 days on snow i dunno if its an option. |

Just come back from doing pretty much the same trip - Park City - Bryce Canyon - Zion - Las Vegas.
Park City is a good all round resort but found the Cottonwood Canyon areas to be better albeit smaller resorts. Big CC has Brighton and Solitude, Little CC has Snowbird and Alta (Alta is skiers only as you prob know). They have the better snowfall and certainly Snowbird has some of the tougher terrain. I think I've seen your wife is a beginning or relative new to snowboarding so I'd avoid Snowbird tbh.
They have a little village (looks like a very mini Whister) at Solitude with condos and a few bars / restaurants etc in it which is where I would think about staying if I went back. Liftopia do some lift ticket and lodging deals there. It will be a bit quiet but depends what you want in resort. You have the added bonus that if there is a big dump of snow they close the access road into each canyon for avi control so you will have the place to yourself for 1-2 hours before everyone comes up.
Brighton is about 1 mile further up the canyon from Solitude and is one of the first places to embrace snowboarding, good variety of terrain and lots of park options.
The other option would be to stay downtown SLC and drive up from there everyday - it's only about 30 mins.
The other 2 resorts around SLC are Snowbasin and Powder Mountain are about 1 hour north of SLC.
En route to Vegas you could stop off at Brian Head too.
The national parks especially Bryce Canyon were amazing, we stayed at Zion Lodge right in the park which was really good.
Didn't enjoy Vegas after being in such amazing chilled places it's quiet a culture shock. Neon Boneyard is worth a visit there with your camera though. http://www.neonmuseum.org/ |

What he said. You don't really want to stay in Snowbird, stay in SLC and drive there, or to any of the other resorts (including Powder Mountain). Park City is a destination resort (read: tourists), most of the other places are for people staying in SLC and driving on a daily basis. I'm sure people stay there, but I'm not sure why you'd want to.
Snowbird is small and you really need to know your way around to get the best from it. It would be easy for the casual visitor on a non powder day to miss the point I think. If it is a powder day, get the 1st tram (you will have to queue).
The snow's not been good this year though and bulletproof in Utah isn't that good. Colorado is worse I hear.
Brian Head is great but it all depends on the snow conditions - that's my go to location if I'm forced to visit hell on earth (Las Vegas).
Until recently Washington state (Baker or Crystal) was the only place with any decent snow, although I'm not sure what end of season conditions would be like there, as it is warm and wet. I'm going to check out Taos in a couple of weeks, but I'm not expecting powder.
It may be worth looking at who-has-what in BC at that time. US/Canadian customs are easier than the general ones (they have bits of the US inside Canada), although they do query UK nationals more than US citizens. |

Mt baker nearest accom is 20 miles away and nearest town is Bellingham about 50 miles away so it's not a resort as such and week might be a bit much it's quite small but epic!
it's only open til 8th then fri- sun thru rest of April.
Oregon has mount hood and bachelor at least one of which is open late season. |

Cheers everyone. I knew Snowbirds wasn't gong to be ideal but it's the only place open in Utah so it was a kind of needs must situation. It's since been suggested to me that we try Mammoth and after checking with them it's open till at least the 22nd. Looks like it'll work with some rejigging of itinerary. Fly to Reno, then on to Mammoth fir a few days, then Vegas (wife love casinos so it's gotta be done) then Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Arches National Park then fly back from Salt lake.
Would have preferred to end up in Vegas last as my wifes going back to DC but im going strait onto Vancouver to spend a week with some friends in Whistler and Vegas to Van is dirt cheap but hey ho can't have it all |
