Morning all,
have just booked a week in March to St Gervais Les Bains. The Evasion ski area seems pretty vast (400+km), but i wondered if anyone had any experience and what their thoughts were ?
Also wondering what the off-piste opportunities are like. Saw a few websites that said they were good, but nothing concrete and no actual info on where to go....so any advice would be gratefully appreciated |

| My best mate has a flat in St. Gervais so I've been a few times and will be out there in March for one of the McNab courses up the road in Chamonix. Have to say I've only boarded in St. Gervais itself on one occassion and can't remember that much about it! The ski/boarding side of St. Gervais is still developing, the town itself is a nice little place with some nice chilled out bars/restaurants, nothing very lively though. There is also a mountain train up to Les Houches which is easuy to get and worth doing. If you were driving yourself it's easy enough to get to Chamonix (20 mins), and a bit further up to Grand Montets. Last year we even went through the Mont Blanc Tunnel to Courmayeur in search of snow (St. Gervais was already closed by then) so quiter easy to get around if you have a car... |

cheers for the info ! Looking forward to the trip, snow seems good, although its always better to have more.....
If you do get a chance to catch up with your mate, would you mind asking him for pointers on where to head to in the area ?
Have done Chamonix a few times and will head over if not very good, but would prefer to stay close to where we're staying (no car = beer ) |

when in march are you over? if i'm around i'll give you a quick tour
the easiest (as in access) off piste is up mont joly and down towards st.nicolas de veroce, or if you get up early either get the bus round to combloux (littered itself with off piste) or go up st gervais, down to the bottom of the princess lift and get the bus over to one of the combloux lifts from there....and go up and over towards la giettaz, la giettaz after a dump is amazing, I can really only compare it in set up to Kicking horse. There's really only one or two chair lifts going up and a couple of reds coming down, the real fun is finding your own line down to the bottom chair! |

Thanks CP !!
We get over on the 3rd March for the week. I hope the warmer weather disappears and we get a couple of days of fresh snow before then
Will have a look where you've advised. We've got a guide booked for the Tuesday too, so we should get some good area coverage and pointers.... |

i think in all honesty its going to be warm until you get here, its due to get colder and snowier from the 5th onwards. Who have you booked a guide with, bass?
still plenty of snow around though, went over to st nicholas saturday and there's still some fresh lines, although there a bit crudy. perfect weather for blasting pistes with your hair on fire though
I'm over in avoraiz that weekend, although i'll be around the park most lunch times in the week, say hello if you see me, green coat, yellow snowboard, not many snowboarders in the park so i'll stand out! Some of the local skiiers kill it up there though! |

Cheers again. Haven't booked a guide...will wait and see what the snow is like first. Saw the forecast and it is going to get quite warm....so slushboarding . The guide we were recommended was with ESF, close to our chalet so fairly straight forward.
Hopefully we'll get some fresh snow. Nothing but piste in Courchevel last year, so aching for some off-piste action this year. although from a timing perspective I think we've missed out !
Will look for you in the park. I'll be in a bright green coat with SCUK sticker stuck on the back of the lid |

CP, thanks for the info. Found the off-piste over towards St Nicholas...a wee bit of a traverse, but once over the track the route through the tree's were fantastic ! Then on another day when there was a whiteout, found some good bits just off the mt d'arbois area too.... All in, 3 fantastic days off-piste. I'm owe you a beer |

Slight hijack.
I might be heading out to St Gervias in August. Can anyone recommend some summer activities/places to go? We should have a car so should be mobile. Also we're probably looking at the cheap end of the scale.
I heard theres some nice lakes to swim in? Know any good easyish walks? |
