Hi,
I'm off to Scotland this eve until sunday, I'm staying in Aviemore with my wife.
My wife is a true beginner (skier, 1 holiday and 2 chilfactore sessions) and I'm beginner/ intermediate boarder. I'm looking for some pointers having never been skiing/boarding in Scotland and I'm looking for a good beginner slope so my wife can build confidence for at least the 1st day or so, my options are Cairngorm, Lecht and Glenshee.
Anyone with experience of these 3? Any comments pointers much appreciated.
Cheers |

Hi,
If you're staying in Aviemore then Cairngorm is the obvious choice. Not been up recently, but my reservations would be over how much snow coverage they have there.
I'd say a trip down to Glenshee is probably the best option in terms of snow / runs open just now. Was up there at the weekend, and things are pretty sweet there just now.
Lot of drag lifts which your wife might be intimidated by - but thats something she's gonna have to overcome regardless of where she goes. |

Incase your not aware of it, and have access to the internet, check http://ski.visitscotland.com/conditions/ each morning before you set off.
According tothat website Glenshee does have a lot open and would offer you the most milage, but with Cairngorm on your doorstep I'd struggle to motivate myself to travel much further especially the first 2 or 3 days!
No first hand knowlege of the snow conditions off me though as I'm sat in the midlands! |

http://www.winterhighland.info/ is a great website for condition info.
Cairngorm has very little coverage lower down so has limited runs open. Saying that it will have more than enough higher up for a beginner or yourself.
I almost pulled the trigger on going up this week too. |

I was up to Cairngorm both Friday and Sunday. Top of the mountain is good and there is plenty open for the beginner. The top plateau was in great condition, also if you're looking for a decent long run you can get from summit to midstation via the traverse to cas then Gunbarrel or zig zags which is a lot of fun, especially doing side hits . Midmountain down is closed though. I had a great weekend but then im fairly local so was a no brainer really. If you are already in aviemore i would at least go up on your first day. Your wife can pick things up and you can have a nice day and then you can make an informed decision on where to go from there.
If you are going to go further afield i would go to Glenshee or Glencoe, and not bother with the lecht. As far as i can tell other than nursery slopes the main runs there are fairly thin. I was speaking with someone on sunday that went there and he also said it was fairly grim outwith the nursery area.
Either way have a great time, im jealous as i wont be able to get back up there for another two weeks. (prays there is snow)
EDIT: there is also two mini shreds at the gorms if your interested in that. |

| I would still call/check in the morning. Friday was forecast for 20 - 40mph winds but it was dead calm. Slight breeze picked up in the afternoon. Have fun. |

Ended up in Glenshee, had a great day a bit windy and viz wasn't great however snow was decent and it did the job of building up confidence and now in Aviemore.
Drove past the Lecht which seemed quite sparse and after speaking to someone earlier in aviemore Cairgorm was very windy today.
Tomorrow, up Cairgorm and hopefully nice and clear!
Thanks for the replies. |

Hey Onmear$e I was talked in to it in chill factore this morning so we are on the m74 as I type. We are gonna check out glenshee, so nice one on the info, neither of us have been before so we thought we'd give it a bash Friday.
We are hitting cairngorm tomorrow staying in aviemore tomorrow night so if you see a couple of guys, I'll be in lime green pants with a brown jacket and no goggles (I just realised I forgot them, agggghhhhh!) and partner in crime Tom, will be in black pants green jacket give us a holla! Spreading the scuk lurve. |

| My mate was at Glenshee yesterday and said it was crap. He said he did every run that was open within an hour. It was hard, icy conditions and poor viz at the higher parts and none of the chairs were open, so it was tows/drag/pomas until he decided enough was enough...and there are roadworks at Blairgowrie as well. |

Sounds like a mare. 2 Chairs open today, no major roadworks and great day had. Shows as the song says "what a difference a day makes". |

Dylanrobinson, Only just logged on again so didn't see your post about goin up the Cairngorm today, probably did see you I was in the red pants and cream jacket.
I have to be honest I thought today was better conditions than yesterday on Glenshee, having said that it seems everyday is different.
Eitherway it beats being In work |
