Hi guys,
Wondering if anyone can offer any advice on Austrian resorts? They seem to be really cheap at the moment, but there's a lot to go through and I don't want to miss any little gems of wisdom you can pass on.
We're keen to try somewhere else having been to Italy and France a few times, and Austria seems a logical choice.
Going late march hopefully, for a week, Ideally it needs to be cheap (students) and suitable for 2 or 3 lads in their early 20's.
Thanks in advance for any advice,
Connor! |

Be careful with the cheap deals as a lot are for small resorts.
Mayrhofen and St. Anton are 2 of the best resorts in Europe, with short (1 hr) transfers and I can highly recommend both.
Done Soll and that was ok, but a high portion of skiiers.
Heard good things about Zell am See/Kaprun, Saalbach/Hinterglemm and Ischgl, the latter is very pricey though.
If you can get a decent price for Mayrhofen, do it. You won't be disappointed. I've done the last week of March a few times (plus 1st week April '11) and it's cost us £200 or less for a B+B package deal. Booked a week or two before, so worth hanging on a month or so. |

| Zell am See is a bit sketchy at that point of the season as the lower runs are only a few hundred metres above sea level so can struggle for snow. |

I went to Zell am See/Kaprun 3 weeks ago and the conditions up top were epic!
If you like safe off piste then I highly recommend the glacier - it has 5 designated off piste runs labelled X1, X2, X3. X4 and you guessed it, X5. Due to the conditions some of the runs were closed occasionally but we still rode them. One day, two of us went up to X1 and had the whole run to ourselves, virgin tracks all the way
In short, my best boarding holiday to date even if I did feck my shoulder on the first day and miss two days riding waiting for them the clear the road after an avalanche so I could get to the hospital... luckily no breaks!
Kaprun is the smaller, quieter resort where we stayed. Not the prettiest but still nicer than the few French resorts I have stayed in . |

What about joining all the rest of the UK Unis that will be heading to Saalbach at the end of March?

You don't have to be at uni to join the trip, you only need to be at uni to compete in the events. |

+1 for Zell/Kaprun. Snow conditions should be good enough in Zell this year for late March, we could still ride top to bottom in second week March last year and was much leaner snow fall. Kaprun is the place to be though, X1 in particular a cracking run with a good steep couloir at the start to get you going before you fly through some virgin powder on the flatter area below. Zell also good for bars etc. and also worth throwing in a trip to Salzburg if you can we did it on our transfer day at the end.) |

| Be aware that while St.Anton has epic apres, the runs in the main resort tend to become mogul fields amazingly quickly and a lot of the slopes are quite steep. |

Thanks very much for the quick and detailed replies, i'll probably look into Mayrhofen first and then the others that you mentioned.
Seriously thanks for your time! Con. |

| St. Anton apres-ski may not be cheap but it's still much better value than French resorts like Meribel, etc. |
