Recently returned from a trip to France. Whilst I was out there I fell and cracked part of my Bern Helmet. Looking for advice, I heard there is a replacement helmet programme offered by Bern but it all the addresses are a US source.
Or Do I repair it? (Is that advisable? or infact possible?). My opinion being once the helmet has taken an impact it does not have the same strength. |

You need to resize your pic to make it smaller, as due to a bug it distorts the forum and cuts off your text.
I think the general rule is if you've taken a hit and cracked it, it's time for a new lid... but looking at that... have you done any damage to the inner shell? To me it looks like all you've cracked is the plastic peak along the rim of the lid, and not actually done any damage to the lid itself, rather just the peak. Are there any signs of stress/damage anywhere on the inside?
Personally, if there were no signs of damage I'd probably use an appropriate expoy to fix that crack, but it's your choice and risk! (Don't use expoy on the inner shell though, it might melt the EPS/Brock foam)
You could contact the UK Distro for Bern lids here and see what they can do for you, they may be able to point you in the right direction for a lid replacement scheme if there is one in the UK. |

There is no damage to the shell of the helmet. Obviously you can see crack from the inside on the peak. The annoying thing being is the helmet was only bought in November.
I'll contact the UK Distribution point and see what they can do. |

| you could drill a little hole at the end of the crack to stop it spreading then glue the crack up. maybe with plastic pipe solvent, depending what the lid is made from |

looks like it's only the peak but I guess it's you decision to with repair/ replace.
As an interesting aside, did anyone listen to radio 4 the other day (yes......I am that old) they reckoned snowsports helmets are only rated for impacts unto 12mph and that despite the increase of helmet use the incidence of head injury hasn't decreased. Would still wear one though!

P
That ol' donkey with a can of worms eh?
It's been disputed left right and centre, but I think people accept if you're going mach 10 and hug a tree, your lid's not going to do anything at all. However, in smaller incedences wearing a lid can stop you getting concussion, or a more serious injury that could lead on to complications later.
Each to their own with regards to who wears them and doesn't, but I don't think anyone should be discouraged in any way from doing so, if they want to.
Personally I haven't worn mine on the last two trips, partially because I don't really like the style of it, as lame as that is! Partially because the EPS liner has come away from the outer shell and needs fixing, to stop it moving around annoyingly. |

| I always assumed helmets were one use pretty much! So if you have a nasty wipeout and the helmet takes it then its times for a new one as it might not do the same again |

As usual, a quality response from you Sir!
Homer: When they refer to one wipeout, they mean if it's damaged, get a new one. In this case, it's perfectly possible that the force cracked the peak of the lid, and did no damage to the rest of it, the bit that's actually got the protective bit in it, and thus he wouldn;t need a new lid, just to repair the crack.
That judgement is ultimately up to him though...! |

| If this was mine I'd be binning it and buying a new one, or trying to blag one from the distro. I wouldn't wear it as protection. |

| It was quite a wipe out, Going about 30mph down a Red Run at Les Deux Alpes. Thought it would be clever to go into an off piste area. The front of my board caught, and I flipped over head over heels. I've emailed the relevant sources, I'm just waiting to hear back. |

| Send the photo with a full warts and all description of the wipeout to whitelines, you never know, could be a letter of the month reward. |
