Post subject: Drying a board  PostPosted: Jan 24, 2012 - 02:01 PM

I'm in the mountains now and for the first time me and my GF have our own boards!

After the first day we brought the boards back to the room and rested them horizontally in the board bags. In the morning there was what looked like rusty water in the bags!

The edges look fine as do the bindings so I don't know where the rust could have come from!

The question is... Should I dry my board or leave it stood up over night?

Cheers,

Chard

Most mountain accommodation should have a ski/snowboard storage or drying room. If not the try the balcony, if you don't have one try the bath.

I tiny bit of rust is not gonna do your board any harm though and will soon rub off.

Hey,

After any sort of riding, I go where its at least room temperature, house, dome changing room etc leave it 10mins to melt any ice / snow then give it a quick rub down and dry with a towel.

When I'm away, I just leave my board upright in the storage area. At home, after riding in Scotland or after a fridge session, I dry my board once I get home with a towel and leave it upright overnight before storing it back in my bag.

Short term, rust isn't an issue - if you're riding the next day it'll just come off as soon as you hit the snow. Longer term if your board is left in storage with rust then it can create small imperfections on your edges, but rarely anything a gentle filing won't fix.

Yeah, not a problem short term. Don't store a board rusty since you'll get a dull edge that might need sharpening and the least amount of edge sharpening you do the better.

There's certain people on this forum who might forget that some people want their boards to last Rolling Eyes

It's understandable, you use yours a lot so they're going to wear out quicker which means they mean less. I'm sure you get a good pro form deal too Wink

Most people buy a board and expect it to last a few years, I'm certainly more precious about my mountain board because I want it to last a long time since I use it relatively little, rather than my jib board which takes a thrashing fairly frequently.

And of course there are some of us who only have 1 board, in which case it has to last!! Cool Not that I'm jealous of you guys or anything haha Mr. Green

Mind you with a trip to the US coming up in a few weeks, I may just have to start a quiver...

The thing which makes them rust is if you put them in bags when wet - anything else and they'll be fine. So sling them in the car wet, but don't sling them in the car in a bag wet. They should be fine in any ski room, or stick them in the hotel bathroom and just leave them.

If you really have to *pack* boards wet (eg if you're catching a plane), then... get a small piece of wax and just run it over the edges.

If one chucks it in a bath , make sure its on a rubber mat or towel , as the edges can damage a bath base very easily ( i know this , and if done in any of the apartments i look after , you wont get your deposit back )

(Look after your board , look after the place your staying including up the hill with fag ends etc too and rubbish )

When away I just leave it in the board room, if you're going to put it away/back in the board bag at the end of the holiday, I tend to leave it in the bathroom of the place I'm staying with a towel on the floor, or just wait for it to melt a little and wipe it down.

No need, we always leave our boards and skis in our heated garage when in the US!!
