Does anyone have any experience of snowboarding through achilles tendon pain?
I did my right achilles hill running last year and it has just flared up again.
The problem is I'm going to Chamonix for one week from January 28th...
Anyone got any ideas on how to manage the injury during the holiday? I'm also going boarding in Bulgaria at the end of February so I don't want to cripple myself.
Thanks for any advice... |

I had achillies tendonitis and it was that hardest injury to overcome of all that I have had, and there have been some pretty nasty ones.
Mine triggered after spraining my ankle badly but refused to rest because I didnt want to miss out on the holiday I was on and the one coming up that I had already booked. This was the most stupid injury related thing I have ever done, it put me out for 18 months. And when I was riding on it, it was so unpleasant anyway that it was stupid of me to have further aggrivated it. The only way that it ever recovered was by completely resting it till it had settled (following physio and steriod injections). And that was quite a while. Then once I started riding again I had to ride in short bursts, i.e only 1 hour at a snowdome at a time, because the tendon was so week that I got a lot of strain type pain. Slowly it strengthened up and its fine as long as I ride regularly, but it will always feel a little delicate. If I were to get a bad flare up again, I would not risk riding on it at all, even if it meant missing a holiday - sorry I know that is not what you want to hear - because it turned out that 1 weeks holiday was not worth the 18 months out afterwards.
Mine was my front foot though and it was much to much strain for it, if its your back foot, it may not be so bad, but if it hurts just don't do it.
Wish I could offer the magic fix that would ride out your holiday, but I never found one. |

| My bad foot is actually my rear leg, so I'm hoping it will suffer less punishment. After reading your post i've resolved to snowboard for just a few hours every day, hopefully that will reduce the damage :s thanks for your help, with physio did they just give you heel drops, straight and bent leg? and calf stretches? |

| I've got the same problem been going to a private physio that plus the exercises they've given me seem to do the trick I also had some custom footbeds made for my boots. Other than that get some naproxen from your gp. |

They also told me to get a balance board, which I did, but it just provided some entertainment rather than actually do anything much of use. I didnt actually loose any flexibility as my ankles were always really flexible, so physio didnt do much for me. I was at the point where needed the steriod injection as couldnt do anything , but that did result in the tendon wasting down, but it was just time that built that back up after graduarly easing myself back into sports.
As you can tell, mine got in quite a bad state because I ignored all the signs, so just take it easy and don't push it too bad. See how you go, but if it hurts make sure you listen to it. If your boots are stiff and well fitting round the ankle that maybe of help to take the strain off it. Take it easy and don't worry if you have to say to your mates thats enough for the day. |

| like I said, physio didnt do much for me, rest did. But if you are having flexibility problems then physio would help you. Try a balance board, they arent expensive and kind of fun, you never know it may help you. |
