Hi
I would like some advice on taking myself and a young boy 8 up to glencoe.
We are both beginners and have learned to snowboard at snowzone over the spring and summer.
my son is very good and i am rubbish! we have our own kit but unsure what to expect.
Is there good access for children to the beginner areas and green slopes?
how friendly are the lifts with kids, what happens if you fall off.
Is there some place to change get warm etc?
Is there a good cafe were my wife can watch, she does not board.
Is there a shop where i can buy stuff i forgot broken etc.
what not to do.
anything i missed!
thanks for any advice from 45 old snowboarder. |

Wowser that is a long list of questions.
First of all relax, Glencoe is not the best beginners resort are less flat areas to get started on. Glenshee or the Lecht is a better choice. However I would still say you will be just fine. There is a cafe to get warm in where your wife can view from. I cant remember seeing a shop that sells much but Im sure the rental can supply you with any emergency bits n pieces. Just go for it you will have a ball and your son and wife will too. I promise you will be fine x |

1. The access chair is simple enough and takes you up to the Plateau Poma. This year they've moved the beginner tow to that area. Once you get the hang of that, then try the Plateau Poma, although be warned, it has a bit of a kick to it (especially if you're only use to SNO!zone's tows).
2. If you fall off, let go. The lift won't stop, so its important you get out of the way as quickly as possible.
3. There are no changing rooms at Glencoe (but tht is the norm at all scottish reosrts). There are toilets and a cafe at the bottom of the hill.
4. Your wife can buy a chairlift ticket and go up the hill, but its pretty exposed. She'd have to stand around beside the slope to watch you.
5. There isn't a shop at Glencoe, only a cafe.
Given your circumstances and requirements, you might be better off looking at Nevis Range which is only another 25 mins up the road. They have a large restaurant/bar at the top of the gondola station, where your wife can retreat to after watching you for a while and the beginner pomas are similar to SNO!zone (i.e. non detachable ones that run slower). |

I reckon Stevie's advice is spot on for your list of requirements.
If nothing else because the cafe at the top of the Gondola at Nevis will keep your Mrs far happier than the one on the Plateau at Glencoe and on many days the Gondola ride up will be more pleasant for a non rider than an exposed chairlift ride.
Glencoe is an awesome hill, but not really one for spectators I don't think. Especially when its moody! |

Tend to agree with butterup. Relax and go have fun. Change in the car, enjoy the bacon rolls and cakes in the cafe and do the runs you feel comfortable with.
Don't worry about Poma either. It is a release one where the guys will help you get comfortable before letting it go. Nice change from the zone where it's s**t or bust.
To be honest I would tend to leave the other half at hom no matter which centre you go to. If you're not taking part it's a real drag and when you guys get to the upper slopes she can't see you anyway.
Btw don't make same mistake I did on first visit and think "I'll just board down to the cafe". If icy its a bit of a challenge
Go enjoy and let us know how it goes. |
