Hi Guys,

I've just been reading about Lufhansa's ski carriage policy again and came accross something I hadn't previously.

Quote:
If you are booking your flight online and would like to take your ski gear with you, then please call the reservations hotline after you have made your online booking. Please register your ski bag there under your booking code.

I also read this site after I saw that paragraph http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=81853

Basically you need to contact Lufthansa prior to travelling to let them know you are taking ski equipment. The phone number is 0871 945 9747. I just called them and they confirmed they had added my ski equimpment to my booking so I have a 15kg allowance for my board, boots and helmet and 23kg for the rest.

This might be common knowledge but it might help someone out!

No problem, I just PM'd the other guys that have said they're booked on Lufthansa flights so hopefully they'll have a read soon.

I've flown with them a couple of times Bham to Munich. Yeah, it seems this peculiarity is down to the fact that some of the planes they fly are narrow bodied (Bombardier I think). This means that technically they have restricted luggage hold space, less than normal with wider bodied aircraft. They even told me once when I tried to 'register' my bag that they had no places left. It seems that in order to avoid congestion in the hold they have a few allocated slots that can quickly fill up. When I got to the airport check it was all normal and nothing was said about it! It seems the baggage staff think it's a big fuss about nothing.

Just been in touch with them and i got a different answer. I was told that because the flight is now with BMI, i have to adhere to BMI's carriage rules and pay £60.

I phoned Lufthansa, explained that my flight was originally with Lufthansa (Booked 09/09/11), so surely my booking is as it was when booking originally. The fact they have changed carrier since (10/10/2011) is irrelevant to me surely.

Contacted BMI and they said the same thing. £60.

The lady at Lufthansa sent me a Pdf with my booking saying Ski / Special baggage was "Confirmed". Apparently, my space is confirmed but it needs paying for at the airport.

Phoned Lufthansa back, and said this cannot be right and they said i have to write to Lufthansa. So i have. Not very helpful.

Hmm that's not good news! I wasn't told anything about having to pay for it, just that it had been confirmed..

They never mentioned anything about BMI to me (even though I saw BMI on my ticket which is why I started to look into it).

I to was told something cometely different. Same that I had to contact bmi which I did. They told me ski bag is free so long as total hold luggage is no more than 20kg so planning to go with that and pack boots and bindings in hand luggage as they are 5kg on there own.

That said the person I spoke to was pretty clueless to be honest. Had to practically drag the info from her and I'm still not sure what she has said is right. Especially as we are getting slightly differing views.

I know! Laughing It sucks! Just the aggro more than anything. If i have to pay £60, fine... what can you do?

Its just the confusion of making a booking and then it all changing. Tbh, i didnt even realise I had to phone reservations to tell them i was taking a bag. I thought you could just rock up.

I will call again tomo maybe and wait for their email. Just glad i have the confirmation i can take a bag. We will see about the cash.

This setback will not get me down Cool

Yeah, the person i spoke to did seem a bit vague. Hence probably calling back tomo. Its fine lads, just make sure you get your bag registered.

To be honest I don't think the Lufthansa / BMI makes a difference reckon they might be the same company. From what I read both were the same. Free if total hold luggage 20kg or less. Then £30 each way for extra 15kg.

I will call again tomorrow also and report back.

I have just emailed them asking for confirmation that what I was told is correct.

I have read several stories of people travelling with BMI via Lufthansa without issues which is encouraging at least.

Edit: I just tried putting our flight details into the BMI website and our flights (from Manchester) show as 'Operated by Lufthansa'.. How confusing!

Hi guys

I was planning to pack light and put all/ most of my clothes with my board and pack the rest in my hand luggage. I thought it was a total of 23 kilo on economy.

I have called to request ski carriage and they have told me 60 euros each way, which is a rip off.

Keep us posted if you find out any more.

Not long now, very excited.

Never flown with Lufthansa, I'm sure I phoned about my board bag as soon as I made my booking months ago which was free to take.

Just logged into Lufthansa and a tick by my booking shows some sort of request has been accepted, doesn't mention anywhere anything about BMI. It also says I need to get my boarding card from quick check in, not sure what I do with my bags though.

Neil, just a bit left of the tick mine says "LH2505 Operated by British Midland International".

I got a response to my email saying that the form I used is for technical help only and advised me to contact the hotline number we used in the first place. I've resubmitted the email to the complaints department but I have a feeling that will be for events that have taken place on flights only.
