So after looking for ages I ended up buying a 2008 158 Burton Clash and bindings second hand.
I have ridden it twice and thought it was OK. Better than the rentals for sure.
The problem is I think its a bit long for me. I adjusted the bindings tonight and it rode much better - my stance felt better and I had more control. Still wasn't feeling 'awesome' though.
Then I tried my mates Ride Machete 152 and I was blown away. I only did one run but I was instantly feeling more comfortable, no problem linking the turns and in general it just felt awesome. Turned much quicker, was able to get rid of speed quicker and just felt far more manoeuvrable.
Everywhere I look, and the advice I have been given suggest I should be riding a 158 or even a 160. I am not sure on my height but I think around 5'8,5'9 but 13stone with size 9.5 boots (my boots are great).
Im seriously tempted to just go and get the machete but don't know what I should do about the size. I see they do a 155 which may be better?
I'm mostly riding in the snow dome (hemel or MK) once a week and hoping to go to the mountains soon. Still a beginner.
Help! |

| I assumed an all mountain board was the term for a 'generic' board to be honest. Still new to all this terminology. |

Could just be the clash is way too soft for you.
I rode one a couple of years back now, and hated it, felt out of control and like the edges would wash all the time. It was a 60 I think, the right length of board for my tastes, but never suited (I am 6ft2 and 16 stone) so no suprise it was too soft, but it's just a thought.
To me at least, it just sounds like you have already outgrown what is (from my reading when looking for my first board 3 years ago) a beginners board.
The machete is much stiffer in comparison, least from memory a 5 flex compared to the clash's 2 maybe? |

Sounds like you've outgrown the thing It's not a particularly responsive board.
I'm looking at all mountain boards too and am a similar size to you so let me know what you think if you try other boards at Hemel or MK Happy to share my 'to try' list if ya interested. |

| I ride a 157 fairly stiff all mountain board for piste charging and a 151 noodle in the dome. Different boards for different jobs. If you want to carve down mountain sides you want bigger and stiffer, if you're mainly in the domes/parks you want shorter and softer. You have to make compromises if you can only carry one board. |

I think I will wait to try the 155 Machete and see how I get on with that (demo) board and just go for that.
It was the weight/height ratings on the boards that were concerning me really. |

i'd have to disagree with the outgrown thing, its a bit of myth IMO opinion that people "outgrow" boards, specially if your only riding one or two weeks a year and a few dome visits thrown in.
Its normally something people tell themselves so they can go buy a new stick |

Would agree for most cases, but reckon the Clash is a special case personally |

| I also I float around the 13 stone mark depending on how close to Christmas it is... I was told to buy around the 159 bracket and I did but after a while I hated the board as it felt like I was strapped to a door. I've now got a DH2 in 155 and love it, I think the sizes are a guide, if you feel you need/want shorter, go for it mate. |

I kind of agree with Philbo. In my limited experience...
I recently traded up from a fairly stiff all mountain directional twin (Sapient PNB2 -156) to a softer, shorter 154. Going back to my old board was like riding a battleship in comparison. I am 5'10" and about 13st after a good meal. All this comparison was done in a fridge though, so we'll see whether I made the right choice after I've taken both boards to the Winter Bash. I'm still a bit apprehensive as to whether the new board will perform off-piste, I know for a fact I am going to love the Evil Twin on piste and in the park. |
