Don't think I've done it in anything less than three and a half hours (but then that's in a minibus/coach)

The French side can be much cheaper. In December we got a Polo for 4 days for £89. Cheapest on the Swiss side was £184.

There are some disadvantages: you don't get a Swiss motorway vignette, so you can't drive on the Swiss motorway - not a big deal once you know the alternative routes out of Geneva. You don't get winter tyres & snow chains as standard - but you can hire them or buy them for about €50 (if you buy them & don't use them, you can usually return them for a refund on your way back!).

In our defence, we did hit rush hour in Annecy and there was some snow on the roads higher up, hence the finger shaped indentations in the dash board. Nothing tightens the sphincter quite like encountering snow in the fast lane when you're overtaking a truck.

Still reckon 21/2 hrs in good conditions to Tignes. Maybe we could have a 'fastest transfer leader board' thread.
