Guys,
Recently taken up boarding last year and am still really crap at it to be honest and fall constantly - I'm not giving up just yet tho!!
Was at glenshee on friday and was quite icey but noticed at the end of it (after many a successful fall) that my legs and body aren't physically up for it...
Can anyone tell me what exercises would help as after just 5 or 6 runs my legs started to ache quite heavily and had to take a break..
I've got moto's and they are brand new with their first outing...
I also don't think it helps that I've still not decided to go goofy or regular lol..
Any help would be appreciated guys,
Tam. |

Gym or just bodyweight and everywhere sort of exercises?
Squats, deadlift, leg press, lunges etc will increase strength in legs and back |

| I've been Snowboarding since Feb 11 and I wasn't up to it phyiscally either, So I've been doing Yoga, Circuit Traning (Lots of squats), running' loads of sit ups not sure if they help tho and Snowboard once a week at Braehead and its all really helped as I spent a full day at Glenshee yesterday and feel fine today and a couple of months ago it would have killed me |

As mentioned, legs are key so start banging out lots of squats.
If you're learning, you'll be picking yourself off the floor a lot, so a few push ups wouldn't hurt.
Otherwise, it's core strength you'll be wanting - sign up for some pilates classes. |

Core strength and leg strength endurance are key so I'd second plenty of circuit training. Core strength is really important as a beginner for picking yourself up every time you fall on your back and I remember when I started the first few weeks I could barely sit up by the end of the holiday as my abs were so sore.
I'm just about to start physio after tearing my achilles so think I'm going to have a chat with the physio and see if they recommend any good exercises for lower leg strength and flexibility for boarding. |

Just raise you base level of fitness with some running and a very basic core and leg program.
The only way to really get fitter for snowboarding is to snowboard. Your riding will improve, which means less up and down from the floor. If you ride more your techinique should improve too which will put less strain on you as you ride.
Unless your really old or a lazy fat knacker you should be able to ride a day without being destroyed. I say this as a lazy fat knacker so abviously I am allowed to say it. |

| dashie's on point here - exercises and conditioning are important, but technique is key. The better you get the less effort you will put into making turns etc - as your technique becomes more refined your movements become more efficient, saving energy and all that jazz |

| Core strength and leg stamina are 100% the most important things for a snowboarder of any level. |

| I find the whole tiredness/technique thing is a viscious circle. As you get tired your technique starts to go which in turn makes riding more tiring so your technique then deteriorates even further and so on. A large proportion of injuries happen towards the end of the day with tired people riding badly and best advice I've ever had is if you're knackered don't give in to the temptation to do just one more run as that's when you're most likely to make a mistake and end up in a blood wagon. If you're really tired pull up a chair have a drink while your mates go for one last run and save yourself to board another day! |

Unless it's the last day. In which case you need to get in as many runs as you're physically capable of until you drop with exhaustion |

Falling over is exhausting as a beginner and so is the first few minutes of being tense. Also noticed once you’re tired and you do fall, you fall like a moron (mate broke her wrists falling onto her hands while tired at about 3mph). End on a high

At least you don't miss any boarding time if you trash yourself on the last day |

Hi Tam
Sounds familiar I do around half a dozen spin classes a week at gym (gave up running now after 3 knee ops) which helps. Still feel quads and hams though so about to start strength program at gym to try build up.
Suspect though that as we hopefully improve technique it will create less strain.
Btw where are you ? I'm in Dunblane so tend to head to Coe as its nearest. |

When I first started I thought I could get away with no real preparation. Chair on the way up, gravity on the way down - how hard can it be? |

You may not miss any boarding time if you trash yourself on the last day but I found out the hard way that if you get put in plaster during the last two days of your holiday and don't have a doctor's letter to say you can fly you get offloaded from your flight home. Ended up running round Toulouse on a Sunday afternoon to find a doctor to write me a letter so I could get on a later flight and get home.
Alternatively when the stewardess asks you when you broke your wrist, etc. just say it was at least three days ago! |
