Looking at a short notice trip on 14th of Jan to France. I have found various deals and have shortlisted the following resorts:-

Tignes/Val Disere
Les Arcs/La Plagne
Val Thorens
Alpe D'huez

Which resort would you recommend on your experience? Any good bars, eateries etc you recommend would be cool too.

Many thanks

I really enjoyed Val last Jan, off to Alpe D'huez early tomorrow morning. You probably can't go wrong.

Of those two i've been to Les arcs and Val T.

Les arcs was a good all round resort, nice park, varied runs, good scene at 1800 shop and bar wise.

Val T was also good, but pretty bleak, can get very windy and cold up there, potential for great snow though, park was also good when I went, but more kicker orientated.

Just found a good deal to les arcs 1950 for a 4* star room, looks sweet. Whats food and drink prices like there, is there a good selection, is access to other arcs resorts easy enough?

I got back from Tignes NYE and it's been crazy out there.

A good link to use (on a smartphone or computer) is http://www.tignes.net/en/tignesMobile-5 ... navWebcams
Click on the links to the various webcams and zoom-in or scroll around.

Also, a handy free app for your smartphone is 'upflatdown in Tignes' which gives loads of local info and what's on gossip (works in web browsers too, though looks like its on a mobile)

Good choice of resort - where you staying?

I've been to them all and to be honest you cant go wrong with any of them, above that its all just personal preference. You'l enjoy La Plagne , huge area if not terrible challenging.

For future reference if you're going to Les Arcs I'd stay in 1800 (assuming that's the middle of the three levels). Has the best selection of shops and bars and whilst the levels are linked in the evenings by gondolas when I went a couple of years ago the gondolas finished so early that from 1950 you just had time to get down to 1800 for a drink and then head back up. 1950 was a bit quiet in the evenings with just a couple of ok bars.

It's good you went with fully catered/free drinks as the shops are expensive (like most places) and the nightlife is practically non-existent.

Overall, pretty good deal I'd say though, plenty of runs (although there are a few too many flats...) and amazing views at the top.

Thumbs Up

You can still board Les Arc if you want for a day or two's riding although from LP1800 maybe an early start would be required. You could either buy the full Paradiski pass or the one that gives you one day in Les Arc then make an early morning bee line to Montchavin and get the Vanoise express cable car over the valley.

Thats what our group is doing as we're staying in Les Coches one lift from the VE cable car so we get the best of both resorts easily enough.

I'm heading off to Les Arcs on Saturday (14th). I'm with a bunch of skiers tho so if you head over to Les Arcs from La Plagne maybe you can rescue me Smile

Luckily when I was in Les Arcs the Vanoise Express was shut for the winter as I don't like cable cars at the best of the times and just looking at the cable stretching across a very deep valley was enough to put me off!

It was closed when I was there too but there's still easily enough to do in Les Arcs without heading over to La Plagne. In fact, we're considering just sticking with the Les Arcs pass this year anyway.
