| Very true Nick he did not directly call people tools, though he certainly implied this, also this thread was not about what looked good, but what about people can afford. Anybody who judges another person simply for the clothes that they wear, well my views on that should not be put too print |

calm yourself down deary...
snowboarding is all about looking good
and as nick so eloquently said i wasn't calling anyone a tool.. i just don't want to look like one..and in my opinion rocking up in many of the brands that TK sell would make me 'feel' a tool
i was trying to point out that as many others have, your local store, sales from big indy's (like 2S & TSA) and direct from brands like Westbeach, can get you just as good kit for even cheaper...plus you'll look better, which as we all know makes you ride better!!
happy new year and lay of the buckfast!!! |

I completely agree with the argument of suporting stores because they support the industry by putting on comps demo days and coaching stuff. I dont however think the fact that they sponsor local riders is a good reason for people to buy there. I mean why should Dave from Essex spend his money in a shop because they give free stuff to Peter from Essex, i mean why has one kid being given free gear got any bearing on other peoples lives? I think shop sponsor too many mediocre riders too young often turning them into arrogant little tw*ats who think they've made it because they get a bit of free gear.
I have to admit I've pondered something along similar lines myself... But instead of sponsored riders it's % discounts to all and sundry.
with Basi I get a shed load of discounts left right and center (and a f'k load more if I skied). SCUK get discounts in even more places (obviously not to the same % off tho). Not to mention anyone working in a dome getting discounts in all the local shops. flutter eyelids at a distro and more discounts, etc... it's practically never ending...
Without wanting to bite the hand that feeds, but wouldn't it be better for everyone in the long-run if they just cut a load of the discounts and reduced the rrp to keep profits/revenue the same? Sure, there's a few ppl that pay rrp and walk on, but equally there's even more that blag what they can (and dare I say possibly ebay/sell their discounted gear to feed their own pockets - would hate to think the number of "brand new in wrapper" boards on here are those obtained on a mental discount). Am I too naive/idealistic to think that if the rrp was dropped (along with the multitude of discounts) that we would all be better off - cheaper for those new to the sport (keeping local shops in better competition with TK Maxx), but not kill off the discounts, just make them truely worthy to those that need them, ie sponsorship to those talented that deserver it but not their entourage... |

the debate of who deserves to be sponsored or not is another story altogether..
I think the idea that if a shop doesn't sponsor riders the cost can come down, is a bit of a fantasy, as the RRP's are set by the manufacturer/distro rather than at shop level.
but I agree there are some shop sponsored riders that don't seem to do much for their loot.... and others who work their backsides off
I guess the proof in the pudding is can you name them, I was having a think last night and tbh, the list was a bit weak...
but that said I couldn't remember anyone sponsored by TK maxx |

I don't think it matters much anymore (though I may have changed my opinions on before in previous years!!)
Indies tend to carry a much higher quality of stock and have better availability in sizing (or be able to order one in at the same price). The only time I think it's cheeky to shop in TK Maxx is for boots, because most people go to a decent shop first, get fitted and then hop online or go to TK Maxx. All in all I'd say online shopping far outweighs the damage to local shops than TK Maxx's sales could ever hope to, as they cater for a market (as someone else pointed out earlier) that's simply not there in the first place for most indies.
I'm not really sure I buy into stores supporting competitions and sponsoring riders as a good reason to shop there. I've never bought a product from any particular brand because a particular rider or any rider is sponsored by them so it doesn't really make sense to me that I'd buy from a shop under the same premise. |

| Just thought I'd mention that I was in TK Maxx again today and they had a whole load of Under Armour baselayers, midlayers and softshell hoodies at practically half price. |

Does make me chuckle these type of threads, smacks a little of snobbery to me, that said I never hear people moaning because some can only afford to take holidays at the lower end of the price market, Bulgaria for example. No one says don't go there its too cheap its not core, go to Canada/USA/Japan and be a real snowboarder as they would be accused of being an **iot, you can afford what you can afford and shouldn't be criticised for it
