Guys,

I know a few of you are pretty handy when it comes to video editing, so I'm hoping you might be able to help me out, and others too.

More and more people take video recording equipment with them on the slopes, so thought it be a good idea for us to help each other as we learn new tricks and techniques when editing the footage.

To start with, I need some help with slow-motion. I recorded some footage in Austria last week on my GoPro HD2. I have a trial copy of Adobe After Effects and have used it to slow down the action. Watching the footage on the GoPro homepage I was hoping I might be able to get something better than I did, and I wondered if anyone had any tips to make this better.

From the above, you will notice that it's not really smooth. And this is snow slowed down anywhere near what the official GP video is. I used the standard option in Adobe AE but it doesn't seem to make this any better.

Does anyone have any tips? Thanks.

I've not used After Effects, but I might be able to point you in the right direction. Choppy slo-mo comes from the video being captured at too low a framerate. So one of two things are normally happening when it comes out choppier than you wanted...

1) The original recording was taken at 30fps. This is fine for normal speed, but slow it down and it's noticeably choppy to the naked eye. For silky smooth slo-mo you need 60fps plus

2) Your programme has downscaled the framerate - some editing software will default to 30fps even if the original was higher (iMovie I'm looking at you!). I'd imagine After Effects does support 60fps, but there may be some niggly setting somewhere that you've overlooked

So yeh - that's your starting point. Hopefully someone more knowledgable than me will come to the rescue soon though!

Thanks for your input.

1) I recorded at 720p @ 60fps

2) I will hunt to see if I see this, although when I imported into AE I couldn't see a setting for which frame rate to use. When I started it actually asked and I said 60.

I read somewhere that I need to scale it down to 24fps before importing it which will actually create a smoother slow motion before importing it into AE and then slowing down further. Is this correct?

did u use the blended-frames option in AE?

don't have it installed atm so can't remember the button or where it is - but the toggle buttons for each layer/item there's about 5 of them. hi/low quality, fx, solo, etc. <- one of them is frame blending/interpolation, which will auto generate missing frames. Hope that's not teaching you how to suck eggs...

yeah I've done those options. Just tried something else which works better now. I've downloaded GoPro CineForm Studio which lets me convert from 60fps to 30fps so I've got 50% the speed with full quality. Now when I go slower still, the quality is much better Smile

well, presumably it's all the same data being used (same 1s and 0s taken from the camera's sd-card) - so can't imagine the GoPro software suddenly unlocking a load of extra information that AE couldn't (without there being some sh1t-storm of them forcing ppl to use their own software).

Can only think you've missed something really obvious - as I say being a back-seat driver looking at my GoPro and my discs of Adobe Master Collection that I've not installed in ages (and used in even longer)...

Coupleo of things might help you out in AE.

Right click your track>time>time stretch. Enter amount you want to stretch. Then tick the frame blending option on your track and enable the frame blending switch. Works quite well.

Another way is grab a plugin for AE called Twixtor by RE:Vision. Put this plug on your track and choose a % to slow it down by and it does the rest. There is a few options to fiddle with that can increase quality.

Both of these methods are guessing the pixels inbetween frames to fill in the gaps so they are not perfect and you will see artifacts from time to time, but they good enough for what we are doing and a damn lot cheaper than a real slow mo camera!

Damn never knew iMovie downgraded it to 30 fps for slo-mo, was playing around with it the other day and thought it was great for novices such as myself, almost bought a macbook pro actually Shocked

Been playing about in Adobe AE and using the Twixtor plug-in I've managed to get it looking quite good. There are numerous settings in there for me to play with, so sure I can get this much better, but I'm really pleased with how this works!!

http://youtu.be/vEdbXcPCvdo

Much better. Cannot wait to get back on Saturday to get some more footage Very Happy
