Have you ever seen the film Bikecar? Its the one where Travis Parker, Scotty Witlake and Louis Fountain make a pedal powered car and cycle from somewhere in Idaho to Washington State. After Scotty Witlake breaks his foot, he's replaced by a someone who lost a leg in a snowboarding accident, and he is a rad rider!

Incredible woman to go through all she's been through and then resolutely refuse to let it stop her living her life is inspirational to us all.

There are a few more videos online of her to talking about her life and her motivations.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yOX2JkcpRQ

Sadly I can't find any vids of her snowboarding be nice to see her in action Smile..

Sorry, but that Americanite schmoochy over sentimentalism just makes me cringe. All sympathies for someone who becomes handicapped through illness, but all the weepy tears just makes me want to turn it off.

I dunno Tibs, it is a little bit cringe, but understandable when she thinks back to being 19 and having no legs but only awful prosthetics, must have been awful

Also agree with Fox, TED talks are amazing

good on her... sometimes the way these stories are out together and portrayed by the media is a bit cringe worthy, but if it get her story out there and raises awareness then ill deal with the cringe and cheese.

+1 to Sidget

I get the impression from the lecture that any tears were genuine. If you notice early on in the performance she is really breathing heavily in between the sentances. Part of this is nerves at being on stage in front of people obviously but it doesn't seem to ease off until after she has spoken about what happened her indicating to me at least that she still has difficulty talking about it which is hardly suprising.

She also very very quickly jumps from talking about the worst of it as she is about to break down onto what has happened since immediately focusing on the humour and how she got her life back.

Either way the tech going into her legs was pretty interesting stuff amazing what we can do now..

Which makes it sad that I couldn't watch it. The americanite schmoochy doochy sentimentality turned me off so much that I stopped watching before it got there.

Maybe people nowadays are more imune to it through watching loads of americanite tv shows, but serously, to me it was unwatchable.

Fair enough normally I'd be in the same boat as you and the americanite stuff but in this instance she just seemed genuine and the tech was interesting.

I think the most interesting parts for me where that initially she found it tough to get the prosthetic legs to bend/stay attached and that she is constantly changing and tweaking the design of her legs to give her more feeling and control. I'd love to know how they work how you transfer your weight to make turns and stop. Whether the techniques are different for adaptive snowboarders to able bodied ones and so on. Its curious stuff..

Sadly google isn't being my friend no real info on it there Sad...
