I like to consider myself a bit of a snowboard 'geek' as i like nothing more than reading up on the latest tech/pro transfers/company products/expeditions/competition results, etc etc, but ive NEVER heard of this....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ski-Snowboard ... 500wt_1203

Ok, i dont actually ride in the proper backcountry at all (only once, last week and that was accessible from a series of chairlifts with some deviation from the marked trails) so perhaps wouldnt know of everything, but i still like to flick through all the crampon/climbing gear/avalanche safety sections of every free-catalog that drops through my letter box (quite a few).

Anyway, i cant decide if its retarded, or actually a genius bit of kit.

Providing it actually works (ie, the ball floats) it will be great, but if you're being tossed/flipped all over the place, whats to stop you from getting tangled up in the rope, dragging the ball under the surface and choking yourself in the process?

looks like another/first version of an abs pack. i dont know if id be wanting to get burried with that cord, if you get tossed about your going to end up getting strangled. i dont persoanly use an abs pack, a friend does when sleding, i had a go with it and they are kind of heavy 2-3kg's befroe you add a prob and shovle. as an extra to my pack i always have an avalung for if the worst happens as it buys you way more time

not the same as an abs pack. an abs pack stops you getting buried in the first place, this is a marker to show where you are. its a good idea though, i was wondering if this exact thing existed!

Aren't avalungs only of use if you can get to the them and get the tube to your mouth? My understanding of avalanches is that if you're buried the snow is compressed around to you the extent that you're extremely lucky if you can move at all let alone have room to get bits out of your jacket or pack and start fiddling around.

The avalung/abs pack is something you inflate as you're sliding - to keep you 'afloat' as everything is moving. If you trigger it when you're already buried it'll be like trying to inflate armbands underwater, which is just stupid

Ah I thought avalung was like a re-breather that you could use to stop yourself dying of carbon dioxide poisoning while you're waiting to be dug out!

Nope, the idea idea is to keep you above the snow. Or thats what the ABS is for (i assumed they are the same thing?)

Aren't you supposed to put the Avalung into your mouth before you start your run. In any case if I was tackling terrain that would require me to use a Avalung I would need to question should I do the run in the first place

Avalung != abs pack.

Avalung is a mouth piece with a tube that goes around your chest and allows you to breathe air from the snowpack at your body, not just where your head is.

No need as the avalung is what I thought it was and not much use if you don't end up buried with your head right next to the mouth piece or don't ride everywhere with it already in your mouth!

That's why you should ride down with the tube close to your mouth, so you can easily get it in the second you start to slide.

K2 avalanche ball has been around for a few years now. Simply a ball that floats on the surface of the slide attached to you by a brightly coloured cord. Helps you get found more quickly.

ABS is an air bag that keeps you on the surface.

Avalung helps you breath if you get buried.

Probably all available in the SCUK Shop at a discount Wink
