Okay, so I'm trying to avoid the customary smoked salmon/gravadlax starter for Christmas dinner this year and thought some of you talented lovely people might have some good ideas for me.
I'm pretty handy in the kitchen and am willing to attempt most things, however as it's Christmas I'm looking for something tasty but easy and quick to prepare - and preferably inexpensive.
So, what you got?
p.s. no tuna please |

Hmmm I like that. That way if I give them enough I might not have to even cook dinner at all! |

have you just look at some posh restaurant menus? Easy way to find suggestions
what's your main?
something hearty/meaty then how about a smooth liver pate on a lightly toasted brioche (with a rocket salad side - try some grated Parmesan cheese and drizzle olive oil). quite cheap to serve a load (1 or 2 packs pate and a loaf of brioche). Find a liver-pate with an orange glaze/flavour for something more funky.
or, make your own terrine - do it before and leave in fridge, no messing about on the day.
fish main - then it's quite common to find something like scallops on black-pudding with a coarse pea-puree (almost mushy pea) side (some add mint to the peas).
or even something like a smoked haddock mousse? |

We always have soup as a starter for Christmas dinner.
You could always make it the day before, or if feeling particularly lazy just open a can. |

Thanks for the ideas guys, think I'll give pate a miss tho as I'm not a big fan and one of our guests is a bit squeemish when it comes to meat - or anything that may have come from an animal
A slightly posher type prawn cocktail might be a go-er tho.
@Jake Durbs - I actually made mini beef wellingtons last weekend for a pre-christmas christmas dinner and they were great. |

| Another for prawn cocktails. Don't mess with the classics. Plenty of ice cold lettuce and a bit of paprika. Wash down with some warm carling lager for that 'British' feel |

Just found out she doesn't like seafood either. Oh well.
Think I might do camembert triangles in puff pastry with rocket leaves and a balsamic glaze, and some sort of fruit chutney on the side. |
