Normallly i'd have probably just read this and not thought anything of it, but a couple of days ago i bought a copy of onboard to read on a plane.
by the time the plane had taken off i'd already put it down and started reading the articles in the inflight magazine as they were more interesting, and half of them were about winter sports!
Onboard was FULL of adverts and photo's, there was barely an article to read that was actually about riding.
anyway, came accross this today, might not interest everyone but i found it good

| i guess as profits slim down they have to chuck more ads in the mag to keep it going, i understand why they do it, but it is a pain... |

| I agree about Onboard. Have you tried Whitelines? I think it has much more interesting articles and the writing is a lot better. |

Onboard has nice arty photo's..but its content is gash and did exactly the same on a long haul flight.
Enjoy my W.L fix though! Does anyone subscribe to any of the U.S magazines...any good! |

yes, whitelines is as illicit points out, globally one of the better magazines. As Mike Ranquet says though, on a whole, they lack genuinely interesting content for the large majority of riders.
I by far, find things like Buloco and angry far more interesting... |

| I like onboard. It's like sidewalk to whitelines' transworld. My favourite is The Reason which is weird because it is free (so I assume supported by ad's) but still has fantastic content. |

I'll probably get lynched for this but....
I was flicking through Fall line skiing (and snowboarding) at my gf's dads the other day, and it's actually got a lot more useful stuff in than most snowboarding mags... I was pretty impressed.
I'm generally more interested in written content than photos myself. |

I think you're right - I stopped buying Onboard a few seasons ago, for exactly all those reasons - there was nothing intereesting to ever read. I always thought, what with the adverts, and the lack of decent editorial, that it had turned American - God knows I've always hated Transworld et al cos you have to turn 3/4 of the way through the mag to get anything that isn't an advert. I think the only time I've bought Onboard in the last few years was when they had Deeper on the cover last year, and the Yes Movie this year.
I think its good though that they pick out Whitelines for praise. I was thinking when I read it that you get lots of editorial, travel news, regular history slots, trick tips etc, and to tar it with the same brush would be unfair. Yes it does have interviews, but normally they're limited and quite often with older, more interesting figures. |

I agree with fall line being a good read. We subscribe to whitelines which is always a good read.
Onboard has no reading in it so i don't even bother buying it know. |

I agree - photos are nice, but I prefer reading things - I always find travel stories and history stories most interesting.
As for Fall Line, if I remember correctly it was the sister mag to Document Snowboard, and was going to cover snowboarding as well as skiing when Document folded. It was a good mag, although I always preferred Whitelines.

I don't understand that - Onboard IMO is way more Americanised than Whitelines - bland and no editorial at all - all photos and adverts |

| They're both owned by Factory Media, but Onboard comes out of Europe, whereas Whitelines is UK based. |

The Reason was started 2.5yrs ago by Ian Sansom, who has been there and done it at every other major magazine over the last 10 years. He set it up at a time when people were saying print was dead and other mags were folding (Snowboard UK, Document, etc). |

surpised that there from the same family. Shows what a difference the editor can make
European onboard is basically photo's of european riders in America. its not as thought there's been no euro resorts open for the last month for them to cover.
With the exception of whitelines (who i cant buy in france ) i'd have to say that i've pretty much given up on hard copy publications. |
