Since I've got a new board / boots and bindings I've been dying to get them on real snow for a test run.
I was hoping to get up to one of the above yesterday - but everyone I know was Christmas shopping or recovering from Christmas parties!
Now I've got a friend to go with tomorrow as we both have the day off work. All my gear is looked out and ready to chuck in the car in the morning. The question is... which one should we go to?
I've looked at the snow reports which seems to look like the Lecht has the most runs / lifts open. I'm ruling out the Gorms this time as they forecast 60-80mph winds. It was like that last time I was there in February and wasn't much fun.
Has anyone been to either The Lecht or Glenshee over the weekend - and what is it like? I guess anything is going to be better than the dry slope I've been using for the last few weeks!! |

Glenshee claim to only have 5 lifts opening tomorrow, and gale-force winds in the afternoon.
Its a tough call. I might just start heading up the road and decide which way to turn when I'm en-route based on their morning snow reports! |

| I was at the Lecht at the weekend and it was good, pretty good cover all round. The pics from glenshee do look awesome however. The lecht is much closer for me though. I think you will be well serviced regardless. Im jealous! dont think i will get back on until after christmas now. :'( |

I think this will be my only chance this year unless I can find a mate who's going on Saturday. A few mates are planning on going between Christmas and New Year - but unfortunately I'm in Tenerife then.
Never mind... less than 7 weeks till Banff |

You must've been panning yourself for the last few weeks until it finally snowed at the weekend!! |

As above even though I'd be en route now if I were riding today!
Only Lecht and Glenshee open today I belive so you've picked the right hills! I'd prob go to Lecht today if there was an option, everywhere looks complete on the webcams this morning and the strong winds will reach the Lecht later in the day (according to my very amature weather forecasting). Runs at the Lecht may be shorter but just make the most of the early snow and find your mountain legs!! |

Yeah - the Lecht was the final destination. We got there at about 9am through blind drifts on the road. There were only about 3 cars in the carpark - and there was no one going about. After using the loo, there was a lady behind the counter and a few other guys standing around. £20 for a lift ticket instead of the usual £28... which was probably to reflect the selection of lifts / runs that were open.
The snow was pretty good. Groomed in the middle with some nice powdery drifts at the sides. It was a little bit windy at the bottom... but pretty mad at the top.
Once we got to about 12 'O clock we stopped for lunch as neither of us had had breakfast. Bad move it turned out.
After lunch we went up the main central poma and then ventured off to the side. The wind was now pretty mental at ground level, but crazy at the top. We did a run to about half way and then caught another poma to the top (an unmanned one that just goes round and round without having to start it). Near the top we were struggling to stay on our feet and the poma was pulling us all over the place.
We went to the bottom, and noticed everyone was standing around - as no lifts were open. After standing about for a while and speaking to the guys in the lift hut, they convinced us that they wouldn't be running again
We packed up and left just after 1pm.
If only we'd waited a bit later for lunch we could have had another 35mins of riding!!
Anyway - I'm from Aberdeen... and my level is... not good enough!
I'd consider myself somewhere between the top of beginner and the bottom of intermediate. Hows about an advanced beginner?! I've been riding for about 5 years now - although its only been for a week / 10 days per year abroad. As my wife is still learning, I find myself just plootering about waiting for her - so have never really pushed myself as far as I'd like. I've started going to the local dryslope to try and improve a bit... although thats only been 3 times so far.
Basically I'm comfortable on most piste runs and enjoy the occasional 'hop' over the natural jumps at the edge of the piste. Next year in Banff I plan on trying to ride switch a bit better and also venturing into the park to have a go on some small jumps / boxes.
