I think the main point that a lot of people are missing here should be highlighted.
If you fall off a poma....get out of the way and let go of the button. It is infuriating when you see people getting dragged up on their @rse when you know it is going to more than likely end up derailing the rope. Spoils the fun for everyone else.
Rant over sorry.... |

I quite enjoy a tricky poma, good for the technique!
An approach that I've always taken has never let me down - particularly with the stacking ones. Rather than jamming the pole between my legs straight away (cheeky) I just hold on to the thing with both arms and get launched that way, wakeboarder style. Once the pace has settled to a more reasonable level I pull the button down and sit on it like you're supposed to. Not sure if this is really an example of good technique but it's been years since I've fallen off one of the buggers!
Last season I was on holiday in Les Arcs. One day we were doing loops by the park, where they've recently installed a t-bar to run alongside it. The French guys who were ripping it on the black jumps - which were the nearest to the t-bar - would finish their run and then just jump onto a t-bar which only had one person on it rather than going down to the lift station. Fair enough.
Anyway, I was on a bar by myself and a little grom skierwanted to join onto my bar. I was on the right side, left was free. He got in the path of the lift in front of me, then somehow managed to sidestep right in front of where I was going! I shouted at him to move left, but he was too French to understand. I bundled into him, held onto the pole for dear life and somehow managed to stay upright. Managed to to get myself balanced, and realised that I had a 10 year old grom straddling my board. Because of the extra weight on my side of the bar I basically had to hug him to stop us both going over. So yeh... slowly being dragged up a mountain while hugging a small child, with my mates pissing themselves on the lift behind me was an interesting one... |

If you can board/ski in Scotland then anywhere else will be a cinch. I hope to head up to Glenshee this weekend and try real snow for the first time.

This made me pee my pants laughing. Great story. What did the wee skier do while you were tenderly cuddling him haha.
I hope there are a few more stories to add after the weekend as it seems many are heading for the hills. Look forward to hearing more. I have a few tricks to try next time im there thanks to you guys. Looking forward to having a bash again. |

| It was awkward. Really f*cking awkward. I felt like mister bad touch. Eventually he managed to push himself forward and get onto his side of the t-bar, but any lingering sense of dignity had long since passed |

My advice to anyone having problems with drag lifts is to spend a week in Yllas, Finland. 26 lifts, 24 of them button or T-bar! Some over 1 km long. (and the 2 chair lifts weren't running).
It was only my second trip, but now I laugh in the face of the Poma and spit in the eye of the T-bar, but I still can't do this...

When I was in the Penken park last winter I saw the funniest/nastiest tbar incident...
I got on the lift and was casually meandering up the hill, looking back to see where my mates had got onto the lift. The person behind me in the queue was a little girl (about 11 I think) with long blonde pigtails and a little backpack on. She royally cocked up the takeoff and somehow managed to get suspended from the tbar...scrrreeeaaming blue murder.
It took a second, but eventually dawned on me that she had slipped off, the tbar had whipped up behind her and hooked one of her backpack straps - pulling her up in the air. Somehow, one of her pigtails had got trapped between the bag strap and the tbar, so she was being suspended by her hair!
I jumped off the lift, skidded back to her and lifted her off. Little cow didn't even say thanks. I was a bit shaken as it had clearly hurt her, but after a few minutes was rolling in the snow at the hilarity of it. Madness. |
