Glaciers in the French Alps have lost a quarter of their area in the past 40 years according to new research:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-16025568

Here's a good summary on the dire state of the Grand Motte in Tignes:

http://glacierchange.wordpress.com/2011/08/20/grande-motte-pramort-glacier-retreat-and-the-tignes-ski-area-france/

You really really shouldn't go riding or skiing on glaciers in the Summer. Glaciers need a pristine white layer of snow on them to help reflect the Suns energy and minimise ice loss during the Summer months. Activity on them that churns up and exposes the old dirty snow means the glacier absorbs more heat and melts faster. The Tignes authorities have already started using snow cannons on the lower part of the Grand Motte to protect it, but a big chunk is expected to disappear within the next decade.

[quote="cantridepete"]theyA growing glacier? I never know what to make of all this global warming talk. It is a worrying topic though…

You're right, but it typically didn't change as fast as it is now. We're seeing changes in the past few decades that used to take tens of thousands of years. It's the rate of change that's the problem and not necessarily the change itself.
