Post subject: How connected is Le Grand Massif?  PostPosted: Dec 06, 2011 - 10:24 PM

Obviously I know that the area contains Flaine, Les Carroz and Samoens (plus others) but wondering if those that have been can tell me how connected it is?

Is it easy enough to get around from one area to the other? i.e. are there good connecting lifts and runs? Or is it all a bit of a trek?

Trying to work how practical it would be to drive to Les Carroz for the day and still have easy access to the whole area.

Searching the forum history has unearthed very little, so all info appreciated!

Was in Samoens a couple of years ago. Nice place but there are some looooong flats connecting, particularly Samoens to La Carroz theres a route called 'la piste neige' goes flat then into slight up hill. It's do-able but you really have to carry a shedload of speed into it.

It is pretty well connected. Have a look on the piste maps to get a better idea though.

Also heading here, staying Les Carroz. Anyone know the best way to get up to flaine quickly?

Looks like 3 separate chairs and a bit of boarding?

Digging this though Smile

Thanks for the feedback guys. Took the plunge and bought a season pass whilst they had a half price offer on. So far, I’ve ridden 4 days in Les Carroz and absolutely loved it. It’s not been fully open (initially due to lack of snow and this last weekend due to too much!) but it’s been great fun playing in the trees.

Having met a few locals they tell me that the link up to Flaine is quite quick and straightforward, so I’m looking forward to checking that out when it opens. It also sounds like each resort has something different to offer so there should be plenty of variety to keep me interested throughout the season.

Thanks again.

Never done teh cascades teh rep said it was pretty poor for boarding. Saw the start of the run when I was at the top of flaine and it looked pretty flat at that point.

Thought the runs from teh top down to Samoens and morillon were excellent. I'd avoid the final runs down to the villages themselves. Did velarge down to vercland and its cracking about 90% of the way. The last 10% was icy as feck and about 2m wide with a stream at one side and trees on the other. Vercland is a feck dump and lift on teh way up stopped for 20 minutes. YMMV.

Quite a few flats on the connecting runs between areas and its quite awkward getting between the areas you're using looking at at least 2 lifts and bit of boarding to get from one to the other in some cases.

Stayed les carroz so getting to the top of flaine took nearly an hour and 4 lifts. Keep an eye on the lift closing times as times as wel as they dont all shut at teh same time.

Wasn't that impressed by Flaine to be honest enjoyed teh Samoens runs better.

Avoid the run called sortilege if you're heading to Flaine its a feck nightmare. Icy mogul mess.

If you're in Les Carroz teh gondola can be a bit busy in teh morning. Its only 1 gondala for teh whole place and the ski schools meet at 9 right next to it. Shows 2 on the piste map but the old one has been phased out by the looks of things.

Theres a wee gate to left hand side for people working upslope and i think the gondola starts at half 8. I breezed on a couple of times and got away with it but some old boy stopped the lift and threw me off twice so i gave up after that Smile

For anyone staying in les carroz the sunotel apartments are tiny but right next to the free bus stop and right above intersport. Spar is cheaper than casino and carpe diem has free wifi. 9% leffe is feck amazing. Wink

Gran massif is a cracking place. As someone said earlier lots of variation in the slopes

Depends on teh room mate we got given 108 on the first floor facing the square. It's about teh size of a garage at the most. Barely room to get the bed folded down. I hope the 4 of you are close Smile No balcony on the front rooms either Sad some rooms are slightly bigger than others and the rear ones have balconies. All teh pictures you see of teh rooms are the ones at the back so they must slightly bigger.

Didnt go out much was there with teh bird so brought loads of pasta and that with us to save cash. Went to L'agora the teepee place in teh middle of square one night . Cracking pizzas and usually quite busy.
Also went la Spatule just next to the carpe diem pub they had a decent deal for steak.
There was a place on teh opposite side of the square from teh hotel. Menu looked amazing but the bird didnt want to go in as it empty the night we went out. Can't rememebr teh name but its next to ski set.

Beer wise it was between 4 and 6 euros for half litre in most places. Spar did 30 stubby kronenburg for 9 euros and some generic one for 7.30 the generic one was actually pretty good. that leffe 9 was about 7 or 8 euros for 6 bottles. Wine was anything form 2 euros and upwards.

Also if your staying in sunotel take toilet roll and stuff for washing dishes they expect the place to be gutted when you leave.

Cheers for the heads up mate, yeah the rooms look tiny, there is a vid on youtube, going with my brother and two mates, so no worries that way,
what did you do with your boards? did you have to store them in your room?
should be fun with two sharing a fold down bed on the floor Very Happy
Drawing of straws for the bunkbeds me thinks!
