Hi,

I'm new to the forum and relatively new to boarding and after a bit of advice.

I'll give a bit of back ground first.

I completed the board in a day course at MK about 5 years ago, went to Whistler and boarded for 3 days - then tried 3 days Skiing!?. Once I came back I went the Mk once for a practice session, but never went again as none of my friends are into either boarding or skiing and split up with the gf I went away with.

A couple of weeks ago I decided I wanted to start again, so booked a level 4 beginners lesson to refresh. Went pretty well and now cant wait to go again.

My question is should I book a level 5 intermediate lesson or just get a couple of hours practice in before and do the lesson in a few weeks?
I'm an hour away from MK so its a fairly long trip to just go there for 1 hour lesson.
But if that would be more benificial then I'll do that.

what do you think?

Cheers

As much practice and tuition as possible is always the way forward. Do you have a holiday booked in a few weeks time?? If so, I would get a group lesson for a few days with a good school... that will be better than an hour at the dome in my opinion.

I did the level 5 and it's great for pointing out little improvements you can make to your technique. Other than that just crowbar in as many recreationals as you can.
Now that you are a member of SCUK you hardly ever have to ride alone. I know I strike up coversations just by aving a SCUK sticker on my helmet. Or you can put up a post in the "No Mates" section.

Where do you drive from?

I might have the chance to go away at the end Feb, so in the mean time was just going to go to the dome and try to improve as quick as possible...as I suck at the moment.

I drive from a small town near Oxford

Maybe I'll do the level 5 first then get in some recreational time afterwards.

Ah right, That's on the wrong side otherwise I'd would've suggested a liftshare!

Never mind!

I wouldnt worry about where you are at the moment. A few pointers and practice.. you will be fine. Get a lesson at the dome and fingers crossed you can get away.

I still sucked after doing a board in a day course, and no amount of practice at Cas or Yad Moss/Weardale made me improve. What sorted me out was 3 days of lessons on holiday, despite getting demoted to a lower group on day two (the only thing I did well was falling over!). Having the ability to practice what you've just been taught without watching the clock is the best way I think.

Hey dude,

I was living in carterton (still kinda am but living in Fernie for the season up until May) when i get back i'd be happy to do lift shares and stuff as only one of my mates skis and hes useless at going.

As for progression i went monday nights to MK its a thing called SnoCoach and is an informal coaching from 7-10 (2 hours coaching and 1 hour to practice it on your own) its only like £28 with SCUK discount and i think its still done by Rachel who is really good.

Have a blast mate and if you need a riding buddy after April give us a shout

not really worth getting lessons once you can link turns, youll probably make more progress on your own.

I would disagree with this. You see endless amounts of newbies linking turns with shocking technique which usually results in them hurting themselves, or someone else because often they think by going a million miles an hour but with no real control makes you a good snowboarder.

Getting the grounding technique now will do you the world of good later on, otherwise you will find yourself progressing to a particular point, but cant go beyond it without nailing yourself - I know I was one of them and its no fun after a couple of years having to take yourself back to square one while everyone else wizzes past you.

I take any opportunity for coaching now, its all good for you.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I think its def another lesson then try to get a couple of hours practice in at a time.

Bailz, yeah the coach mentioned the Monday night thing when I was there last. I might give that a go as well.
Def up for the lift share. Give us a shout when your back.

Cheers everyone

so so so wrong.

thats the exact point in peoples riding where a load of bad habits can arise.

i generally suggest to people on lessons, that once they can link turns safely they should go and get 10 or so hours in just riding and having fun, then come back for a quick lesson so we can fix all the faults that will have developed.

its easy to snowboard badly.
difficult to do it really well.
