So...end of last season I took a bit of a tumble on the last say...twisted my left leg...bit swollen and bruised but as I was coming home the next day, didn't worry too much.
This week I upped my preseason training...rowing and squats...I now have a soft lump sticking out of the outside of my leg, about 2 inches long, 1 inch wide and out about 1/2 inch.
I'm booked to see a specialist on the 9th...but the gp thinks I have pushed soft tissue through a muscle...
Anyone done anything similar?
If I have to have surgery any ideas on recovery time/strength after an op?

i reccon the specialist you're booked in to see is a little more qualified on such matters than a load of people who have an internet at home

Even if I was an orthopaedic surgeon, I would struggle to make a diagnosis on the basis of the picture (not even sure which part of the leg it is!) and the details you've given. Is the lump causing any discomfort or loss of/restriction in function? Is it growing in size? Surgery is rather unlikely if you answer no to all these questions. |

Sorry, lower calf about 5 inches up from the ankle bone. it's hot and swells up when I walk around for the day.
With you waiting for the Orthopeadic Surgeons view...just wondered in anyone else had damaged muscles in their lower legs...ballpark recovery times etc...

Get some better pictures of the lump.
We'll also get to admire the tattoos! |

An accurate diagnosis can only be made with actual examination and also possibly investigations. Is the lump worse when cocking the foot up or pushing it down (like on a pedal)?
Is the lump warm, bluish and hot? It may be a varicose vein.
Anyway, on the limited information, I hazard a guess: a soleus muscle tear in which case surgery would only be considered if it was causing disability!

This armchair diagnosis has to be taken with a huge pinch of salt. I'd be interested to know the specialist's actual diagnosis. |

You may well win a prize!
My GP's referral is for a potential torn soleus with fatty tissue from underneath pushing through.
Hoping for a cancellation this friday as it appears to be getting worse :S |

ha!
Suggestions from my friends have so far run to:
Leg AIDS, Alien infestation, and a third ball growing through...
One of those was from a trainee doctor. |

On a more serious note, hope it turns out to be nothing bad. |

It was the trainee doctor who suggested the Alien infestation, I think he was hopeful of making a medical breakthrough and winning a nobel prize.
Ice is helping with the pain, but the swelling isn't going down.
I'm not a good patient. I want fixed now! |

probably best to have the leg removed and replaced with a wooden stump. On the positive side you'll be able to captain a boat |
