Hey guys, thinking about getting the new hd hero for my trip in February. Just wondering if anyone has had the opportunity to use one yet and if so, what's it like on the slopes? Very Happy

Wouldn't have thought many people would have tried it on the slopes yet - especially in Europe with the newness of the camera and the lack of snow at the moment.

I have no doubt it will be excellent though - the GoPro HD has proved itself great and the 2 is a definite improvement from what I've seen.

My only problem with it is the form factor of the GoPro, personally I prefer the Contour from that point of view. Check out the ROAM or + versions as direct alternatives.

Hopefully getting a review copy of the Hero2 soon and reviewed the Contour+ recently.

Check out www.sportsvideoforum.com if you're interested.

Been considering getting one of these also but not taken the plunge yet...

Perhaps a stupid question but are you allowed to use them in indoor slopes these days? I'm not expecting to do anything worthwhile but its a big cost for just my yearly hol!

I got a Hero2 from ActionCameras (with the SCUK 10% discount) after they let me return the Hero i bought at the Metroski show (the day after I bought it) when the Hero2 was announced, and although I've not used it on a slope yet I'm more than impressed with the quality of the picture from it over what my ContourHD produces.

In changing light conditions the exposure adjusts so that it's always well exposed - that doesn't sound like much to be happy about, but with no exposure compensation on the ContourHD any variation in the light caused the footage to be either under- or over-exposed.
Add to that the higher quality lens, easier to use menus on the front of the Hero2 and superb resolution choices and for me it's a winner.

Ok, it's a bit boxy, but it rather sacrifice how it looks for the quality of the picture it supplies. I see GoPros in shot on tv programmes all the time - so if it's good enough for the pros... (only ever seen a Contour used once on tv on a piece BBC sport anchor Christ Hollins did on lawn-mower racing! It wasn't as good as Top Gear, but then they use GoPros)

I guess the thing to do is look into the specs of GoPros and Contours (or even Drifts as they're supposed to be very good), try to see them in the flesh, and then go with whatever you're happiest with..

They gave me no trouble at all there, although they do give you trouble with larger cameras in my experience. It's private property so they can set the rules.

If you can, try them, look at the footage, and then make up your mind. You're not shooting the camera, you're shooting with it.

I have both the GoPro HD and the HD2. I will be taking them both to Austria on the 10th. Happy to share any video I make (if I get any snow to ride)

I have bought a HD2 as a "To me, from me" Xmas present. I own't be using mine until January when I'm off to St Anton. I'm just debating whether to mount it on the side or top of the helmet. I was also contemplating buying an extendable pole as an additonal mount.

I put mine on the top of the helmet, but most of the time it was on the end of a snapped ski pole. Much easier to get cool follow shots and to pass around your mates.

Only problem with having it on your head is it is on your head. So you're not in any of the shots. Stick it on a pole, or ski or anything and pass that thing around!!

Independent reviews I've seen suggest that there isn't a huge leap in quality over the first gen camera, but then the original was pretty good anyway.

It's biggest advantage really is just the ease of use.
I hadn't actually used my 1st gen for a while, grabbed it the other day and I'd totally forgotten what combination of buttons I needed to press etc to change things!

Both versions shine at their best outdoors in good light.

I'm personally looking forward to the 'WiFi Back' they are releasing at the start of next year. It looks like you might be able to view what you are recording on a smart phone, such as an iPhone. Will make checking you've got it at a good angle a lot easier when it's attached to your head.

I've had the HD Hero for about 18 months and it's pretty bloody good I can tell ya!
I will say and take this as from someone who's used one for snowboarding.....you really need the anti-fog inserts otherwise it will ruin the images!....I use mine in the sealed waterproof housing as I tend to fall more than I should...haha!!...I don't want any water in my camera thanks!! The inserts last yonks, you can dry them out and re-use them I'm still on my first set (you get six, so three pairs, one for each side)
I just got the LCD screen this weekend and it's sooooo good!!
Only con I have with this camera is the daft menu.....it takes a fair bit to get used to!
But image wise....WOW!! Full HD and I run a 16GB SCHD card (class 4) And I use their mental sticky helmet mount and it sits on the top near the front of my lid!

Don't you find editing the 1080p output taxes your hardward? .. I prefer to film in 720p 60fps as my quad core, 12gig machine just about copes!.

I also prefer to shoot in 720p @ 60fps. Not only do you get the 170 degree viewing angle, you also get more frames for slo-motion.

It's a shame you can only use 120fps in WVGA mode on the new one. That would have been awesome at 720p

Seems that way:

Quote:
Wi-Fi-enable your HD HERO2 or original HD HERO camera with the Wi-Fi BacPac™ and Wi-Fi Remote.

The Wi-Fi BacPac attaches to your HD HERO2 camera to enable long range video remote control via the Wi-Fi Remote or a smartphone, tablet, or computer running a free GoPro App. Waterproof and durable, the Wi-Fi Remote enables complete control of up to 50 HD HERO2 cameras at a time.

When paired with the Wi-Fi BacPac, the HD HERO2 also supports live video streaming and remote control via smart-devices, computers and the Web wherever Wi-Fi or a mobile hotspot is present. Record one video stream to your HD HERO2′s SD card while sending a second video stream via Wi-Fi to your smart-device, computer or the Web.

The original HD HERO is also compatible with the Wi-Fi BacPac and Wi-Fi Remote with support for remote control functions only. Video streaming is not available on the original HD HERO camera.
