hi all, just got back from all day session at Tamworth yesterday. All going really well, really sharpening up those turns, when...

Somehow caught a rail in transition from toe to heelside and fell on my backside. I wasn't going fast but my body stopped abruptly and the momentum seems to have been transfered into my groin on the leftside.

I was a bit winded but didn't want to end a great session on a bad note, so caught another couple of tentative runs before heading upstairs for a pint a nd a wind down.

No joke, it took me 20 mins to hobble back to the Holiday Inn next door, and I have been almost completely crippled for 24 hours now. I can hardly walk, and need help in getting undressed. Won't make work tomorrow either and as self employed it's more expense.

Anyone know of anything similar? I didn't think these types of injury were common in snowboarding. I have wrist protectors in my gloves, and wear a helmet, but this has knocked my confidence a bit.

This is my first post so hello to all!

Cheers.

If you have pulled your groin you need to rest. 12 weeks normally. Does it hurt to sneeze and cough? That's normally a good sign it's knackered. Go see the doc/physio

I've not heard of anyone do this snowboarding but it is a fairly common sporting injury in general - have had plenty of footie and rugby teammates who have pulled groin muscles.

Initially you should rest up, take plenty of painkillers/ant-inflams, ice the injury in the first 24-48 hours then apply heat compression after that. You generally need 4-12 weeks rest (depending on Grade/severity) and possibly physio after that. Cases that do not respond to conservative treatment may need surgery, chronic cases may also be as a result of muscle weakness or a hernia.

In terms of prevention, a proper warm-up will help guard against a repeat injury - some people advise using cycling shorts to help support the area, I suppose in theory certain impact shorts would achieve the same thing.

Best thing to do is visit your doc and get properly diagnosed and follow their advice - don't try and come back too early.

Groins strains are mostly caused by lack of stretching or lack of salt believe it or not. Now obviously dont go and eat a teaspoon of salt cos then youll be posting saying youve had a heart attack, or that you are infact a Slug, and have died, and we dont want that do we.

Do this alot playing footy etc. Best thing to do is rest as said above. For any injuries the RICE method can mostly be applied.

REST
ICE
Compression
Elevation

Unfortunately with the groin muscle, its mostly relaxed and has a high blood supply. Afew times a day try and stretch it out. The muscle will mostly be in a contracted state with muscle tightening over it to protect the tissue. Rest, but every so often give it a stretch, nothing major, just until you can feel the muscle. Make sure you do this lightly, but dont go back to boarding too early otherwise it will give way again.

I watched alot of Dick Van Dyke thats how i know all this*

*only joking, just know these things

I did the same as you except off a kicker at Hemel. It took about 4 weeks for it to heal up enough to go running but it was ok enough to go riding (snowboard and mountain bike) after a week.

I just rested as much as possible (ie sat on my ass) and took ibuprophen regularly for 2 weeks to reduce inflamation. That's all. Ice and deep-heat in the groin area...that's just wrong.

You should be improving after a week but if you aren't, get some proper medical advise. It's free for the time being.

Pinch of sea salt in some orange juice every now and again. I also have a dioralyte every other month or so. And hit up the cod liver and fish in general too.

Stretching is the key. Used to do ju-jutsu so had to take good care of my groinseses. Rest it for now and stretch regularly when you're better i.e. at least every other day and you'll feel a world of difference.
