Going Tignes on 28th Jan, and thinking about hiring a car at Geneva and driving it, so we can have a car for runs to Bourg St Maurice, and also not have to get out of bed for a 4am transfer on the way back.
Is this daft, or are the roads usually in decent nick? |

and just to reiterate what mini said
the roads are normally brilliant for that trip.
In all seriousness, its a pretty easy drive, you just follow the big sign to FRANCE then its pretty much a straight road. Bear in mind you may have to pay to park in resort though, Tignes doesnt have much free space available. |

Haha, I saw that!
The drive is alright, a bit long but not too bad and the odd pay toll. We needed to put on the snow chains going up the hill to Tignes but we left them on to store in the underground for 4 days.
I can safely say one of the least fun hrs of in my life was coming down the hill when the dumping snow turned to sleet to heavy rain trying to untangle them from the brake lines in the dark when you have a flight to check in for.
I'll take Winter tyres over chains every single time! |

| Stop in Annecy, most beautiful town in France and good to break the Journey up. The route isnt quite s strait forward as people have made out but unless you're a bumbass its easy to navigate. Parking in town is bloody expensive though, only free parking is down in Breviere which is a 20 minutes bus ride form resort. And be warned, they do tow in the town. |

What he said! Geneva airport is literally a stone's throw from the French border and there's a finger of France that actually goes in to the airport and is where the French car hire is situated.
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=geneva+ ... h&z=15
The access road ends up at where it says "D1005" at the top of that map. You'd turn right to go back through customs in to Switzerland and turn left to stay in France.
Do remember that to drive back through Geneva, which is the shortest route, you need Swiss car tax. They'll sting you for that as you cross the border, so may be worth avoiding Switzerland altogether. |

| My in-laws live just over the border in France, we always hire from the French side. Much cheaper & no more hassle once you know where to go. The only difference is you don't get the Swiss motorway carnet & they will charge you at the border if you don't have one (€40?) and the Swiss hire cars have snow tyres & chains in the winter. |

On the car hire website, choose France, then Geneva Airport or Switzerland, Geneva Airport - I find Auto-Europe is usually cheapest. Not everyone has rentals on the French side.
With the Swiss motorway carnet, just avoid the motorways, you can leave the airport by 2 routes. The Ferney-Voltaire route is longer but less traffic, the Geneva route is shorter & you can go round the lake but avoid rush hours. I've only ever used the Ferney-Voltaire route as the in-laws live on that side. |
