Since the amazing season Scotland had last year I'd been thinking about hiking a lot more in order to get some fresh lines long after the centres had been tracked out.
Doing some reading on TGR and Splitboard.com I decided to take the plunge and try out a DIY splitboard build.
With the often "firm" Scottish conditions I wanted to split a Mervin Magnatraction board. Found a Gnu Rider's Choice at a silly price from Mon@SS20 so couldn't refuse......Cheers Mon!!
Next I got the Voile DIY kit from Steve@Sick+The Wrong,Thanks a lot for all the help Steve!!
Then lucked out and found some secondhand Ride bindings customised by the imfamous Ken Mudd aka Rughty over on Splitboard.com
Instead of using stock bindings to bolt onto the Voile slider plates which raises your bindings about 2"off your board, Ken cuts the baseplates out of any metal binding and welds the slider back in as the baseplate giving a binding that sits directly on your board
Nice nylon toe ramps
Seriously light, strong binding with proper highbacks and decent straps unlike some specific splitboard bindings
Everything was to hand now so started marking up the board to split it.
Sort of looks in the middle.....
Chopped!!
This obviously leaves the cut edges open to the elements which need to be selaed to stop water getting in and detroying the board. I have a friend, old time Westbeach+Joyride rider Keith Paterson who owns and runs a fibreglass company seal the edges with resin and put a nice gelcoat on the edges!!
Nice one Keith!!!
The Voile kit comes with cool sticker templates for the main board clips
Decide to use Karakorams K-clips instead of the Voile hooks which give a much tighter fit.
Drilling holes for K-clips
One side fitted
And the other
Together

Next the nose and tail clips, again used the Karakoram ones.
Template
Fitted
Next had to use the templates for the touring brackets which allow you to go into ski mode
You then need to find the balance point with the hardware on and move everything forward by 1cm so your tips will lift out of the snow.I pushed mine forward by 1" so they'll lift a little higher in all that deep Scottish snow we're going to get!!

| looks ace - any chance you can resize/crop the pics to 530px wide (max) so it doesn't screw up the text? Some of your images are 1024 wide so all the text disappears off to the right into no-man's land... |

All the T-bolt holes need to be epoxy'd
I used a marine epoxy which can expand and contract in varying temperatures and take impacts
Leave to cure for 24 hours then sand flush
All done.Bindings on!!
Ski mode

Looks amazing - a proper job done.
Keith Paterson of PPS used to ride for Westbeach?!!
I was speaking to him a few weeks ago about snowboarding - and all he said was he used to ride alot when he was younger!! |

Haha!! Thanks for all the postive feedback guys!!
Nick, you should totally do it!! Toughest part is the actually splitting of the board, then its all just careful prep and drilling etc,etc
@ P3eps : Keith had a Paterson pant one season on Westbeach!! He used to ride for for them,Joyride,Airwalk and Smith same time as Danny Wheeler. Properly sick rider. Hella smooth
I just need to now scrape together enough cash for some skins then I'm all set.
Snow would help too! |

| Would love to do this with a Head AK intelligence but not sure how well the board would work after being cut down the middle, do the magical gubbins sit int he middle? |

I know a couple of guys who created splitboards using the same kit last year.
They said it worked, but the trouble, as cwj is hinting at, is that most boards are constructed with no intention of them ever being used after having been cut in half. There are all kinds of stringers and other items used in many of the cores and across the centre of a board.
With a proper splitboard, you don't have that problem, which is why one of them said he was going to get one instead for future use. |

Some boards are made with it in mind that they would still be usable as a split board, the stringers on the rossi experience for example are down each side and none of the Jones range seem to have gubbins down the middles. The Rome Notch however, not so much I don't think with the bamboo and stuff in the middle of the tip and tail.
Someone should make a big ass list of boards that it wouldn't hurt to cut in two. |
